About The Position

We are currently seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our growing Energy and Resources Team across North America. This position reports to the Discipline Manager - Instrumentation and Controls. You will have the opportunity to join our Delivery Center team providing project support throughout our entire Energy and Resources operating unit. This includes exposure to industry sectors such as Mining, Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Oil & Gas production, processing and transportation, and the rapidly growing Renewable Energy sector including exciting and iconic energy transition projects across North America. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects both domestic and international. The successful candidate is expected to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer certain instrumentation and control systems or products for a project; along with various other tasks including calculations, QC and field work. This role is a full-time staff employee position.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Lead Engineer on detailed engineering/construction projects with a consulting firm or owners team.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and project engineering experience.
  • Ability to take the lead on a project team and mentor junior staff members.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Technical Diploma in a related engineering field (Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Electronics)
  • 10 + years of experience in engineering, design, and construction in the sectors covered by “heavy industry” including Oil & Gas, Thermal and Hydro-Power Generation, Mining, etc…
  • PE Licensed in the state of Texas or Arizona, or the ability/commitment to acquire one.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in underground mine design will be a strong asset.
  • Particular experience in the Power sector will be beneficial.
  • Instrumentation & Controls PE License in other jurisdictions are beneficial as well.

Responsibilities

  • Understanding and working in compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations for Stantec and its clients.
  • Making a personal commitment toward preserving the health and safety of all employees and demonstrating commitment through personal interactions and designs.
  • Engaging in the development of design through verbal, written, and visual methods including sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and redlines.
  • Supporting or leading project coordination meetings with internal multi-discipline team members and/or external consultants, owner reps, contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.
  • Participating in client project requirement meetings, PHAs, value analysis sessions, and basic cost estimating.
  • Assisting other project leads with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
  • Being client facing and including attending client meetings, which may at times be remote, as well as corresponding directly with the client.
  • Leading and / or working on multiple projects when required.
  • Leading or being a member of a technical team developing instrumentation and controls deliverables including but not limited to: instrument datasheets; instrument index; instrumentation calculations; installation details.
  • Providing P&ID development input and support.
  • Participating in HAZOP and various other process safety assessment, evaluation, and design sessions.
  • Participating in 3D model and constructability reviews.
  • Evaluating, selecting, specifying, and designing all instrumentation specified systems or products for a project.
  • Developing controls designs and deliverables including shutdown keys; control narratives; control system architecture and network details; control system integration plans; control system panel designs; I/O, wiring schematics and various other logic and safety deliverables.
  • Designing facility / mine-wide industrial networks: fibre-optic backbones and drops; leaky feeder radio; hoist signaling and Wi-Fi / LTE coverage.
  • Selecting network hardware including ruggedized equipment and appropriately rated equipment for the hazardous area.
  • Specifying, designing, selecting control and auxiliary systems and multiple networks in a mine environment.
  • Leading and supporting the design of control / server rooms including consideration of many aspects including: console layouts, engineering–operations network segregation, server racks with mine-hardened enclosures, UPS/redundant power, patch panels/fiber terminations, dust-protected HVAC, and physical security.
  • Designing for the integration of multiple utility auxiliary systems and their communication networks: CCTV and security systems including explosion-proof IP camera selection and layouts; fire and gas detection and alarm system.
  • Developing instrument location plans and cable routing layouts.
  • Completing cable schedules and selecting cables according to service including LSZH, chemical and fire resistance.
  • Designing within the hazardous area classification standards (NEC, IECEx, ATEX, ISA) for gases and dusts and confined space hazards.
  • Specifying and selecting fire, gas, smoke, heat etc… detection systems and integrating them into the facility control system.
  • Developing field instrumentation specifications and material requisitions.
  • Conducting multidiscipline vendor equipment package reviews and vendor documentation reviews for purchased instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Reviewing and analyzing drawings for possible safety and constructability problems prior to issuance to clients.
