About The Position

Our Colorado Springs, CO site is seeking a Senior Automation and Controls Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced automation systems for our flagship manufacturing facility. In this role, you will serve as a technical expert, driving complex automation projects from concept through implementation, ensuring safety, reliability, and scalability. You will mentor junior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and influence strategic automation initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • 6-10 years of experience in industrial automation and controls engineering.
  • Expert-level proficiency in PLC programming (Allen Bradley/Rockwell), HMI/SCADA systems, and motion control.
  • Strong background in robotics integration (Fanuc, ABB, or similar).
  • Deep understanding of industrial networks, safety systems, and standards.
  • Proven track record of leading large-scale automation projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vision systems, AMRs/AGVs, and advanced material handling.
  • Knowledge of MES integration and data analytics for smart manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools (SolidWorks) and mechanical design principles.
  • Exposure to cleanroom automation and high-precision assembly processes.
  • Ability to influence automation strategy and drive continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and integration of advanced automation systems, robotics, and controls.
  • Write, debug, and optimize robot programs, PLC logic, and HMI interfaces to improve cycle time, reliability, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Develop and implement automated inspection systems utilizing vision, sensors, and gauging to verify part presence, orientation, dimensional accuracy, and cosmetic quality.
  • Lead internal system commissioning, validation, and acceptance testing.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for automation‑related downtime, quality issues, and system failures.
  • Drive equipment specification, vendor selection, and acceptance testing (FAT/SAT).
  • Conduct risk assessments, safety validations, and compliance checks.
  • Optimize automation for throughput, quality, and cost efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot complex control systems and implement advanced diagnostics.
  • Mentor and train engineers and technicians on automation best practices.
  • Collaborate with global teams to standardize automation platforms and processes.
  • Stay ahead of emerging technologies and recommend strategic improvements.
