About The Position

The Devices and Services org at Amazon has been the innovation engine of consumer electronics at Amazon with the industry-leading Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Fire TV, Echo, the most popular smart speaker and Alexa, the leading AI assistant. We are looking for Senior Applied Scientist- Audio to join the Edge Technology team. We are responsible for all of the Echo audio features including Spatial audio and Home Theater. Your work will have a large impact on the lives of Echo customers as music listening is the most popular feature.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of industry or academic research experience
  • Experience in embedded development in C/C++, or experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience in written and oral communication, including the ability to communicate with all levels in the organization (technical, business, executive)
  • Proven track record in commercializing innovative audio (music processing especially in spatial audio) algorithms
  • Passion for high fidelity music rendering and skilled in critical listening
  • Expert knowledge in music signal processing theory and applications- filter design optimization, limiter/compressor, dynamic range compression, up mixing, binaural rendering etc
  • Proficient with real-time audio programming in C/C++ and Python/Matlab

Nice To Haves

  • Have peer-reviewed scientific contributions in premier journals and conferences
  • Experience with ML application in music processing - generative model (diffusion or auto-encoder) for source separation, up mixing and 3D audio applications
  • Basic understanding of physical acoustics, room acoustics, and transducer theory
  • Good understanding of a full smart audio system design - microphone array, loudspeaker, ADC, gain stages
  • Familiarity with voice processing - beamforming, echo cancellation, noise reduction etc.
  • Understanding of music production process- stereo and multichannel audio formats, mixing/mastering and reproduction
  • Experience with mentoring junior researchers and graduate interns

Responsibilities

  • Be the champion of Echo music processing technology innovation from ideation, proof of concept to productization
  • Propose new research projects, get buy-in from stakeholders, and lead the team for successful execution
  • Work closely with an inter-disciplinary product development team including outside partners to bring the prototype algorithm into commercialization
  • Be a team leader in an open and collaborative environment
