About The Position

Mechanical Engineers at L3Harris perform a wide range of aircraft mechanical design activities involving fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Work includes integrating airborne systems into special mission aircraft and developing aircraft modifications. Engineers use 3D parametric CAD, rapid prototyping, and other tools to develop and validate designs, and produce technical drawings, procedures, and other documentation that defines the design. The role can involve all phases of product design, from concept development and detailed design through manufacturing, aircraft installation, and customer follow-up. The Waco Modernization and Modifications Group offers projects across varied aircraft, technologies, and structural materials. This position designs and provides liaison for aircraft primary and secondary structures, supports production and manufacturing in interpreting engineering designs and drawings, prepares and releases engineering drawings within schedule and budget constraints, develops bids for customer change orders and new pursuits, and documents and reviews designs with peers, management, and customers. The role is onsite in Waco, Texas, on a 9/80 schedule: employees work nine days in each 14-day period for 80 hours, with every other Friday off. It requires the ability to work in aircraft and hangars, travel as required (less than 10%), and work any shift, weekends, and overtime as required. The employee must be able to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or an equivalent field, with at least 2 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience; alternatively, a graduate degree with 0–2 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 6 years of prior mechanical design engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience using 3D CAD programs to create solid models and 2D detail, assembly, and installation drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles for aircraft structures and components.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in an aircraft and aircraft hangar environment, including climbing or boarding and working inside aircraft; bending, stooping, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and grasping; and working in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Willingness and ability to work any shift, weekends, and overtime as required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required (less than 10%).
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with mechanical design principles for aircraft structures and components.
  • Mid-level knowledge of 3D CAD tools such as Creo Parametric, Siemens NX, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with aircraft and military design standards such as SAE AS50881, MIL-STD-704, MIL-E-7016, SAE ARP4754, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-882, and MIL-HDBK-516.
  • Ability to manage budgets and schedules, serve as a task leader within the team, and mentor junior team members for integration design and liaison.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Design aircraft primary and secondary structures using 3D CAD and applicable military and commercial design standards, customer specifications, and system requirements.
  • Provide engineering liaison to production and manufacturing, including interpreting engineering designs and drawings.
  • Prepare and release engineering drawings within allocated schedule and budget constraints.
  • Generate bids for customer-requested change orders and new pursuits.
  • Document and review designs with peers, management, and customers.
  • Participate in product design phases including concept development, detailed design, manufacturing, aircraft installation, and customer follow-up.
