About The Position

The mission of the Business Unit Accounting & Controls – Life and Disability (“BUAC Life & DI”) team of the Corporate Controllers Department is to partner with our stakeholders by understanding their needs to ultimately provide a service that is superb, timely and valuable, while simultaneously expanding and improving our service capabilities. Life & Disability Controllers works closely with a variety of stakeholders in New York Life Insurance Company’s insurance lines of business (including our Mexican subsidiary Seguros Monterrey New York Life) and other corporate areas to ensure the integrity of New York Life general ledgers, deliver timely and accurate financial reporting and drive continuous improvement in our processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5-7+ years of experience in insurance, reinsurance or public accounting
  • Strong understanding of statutory accounting principles, financial reporting and internal controls
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and translate results into actionable insights
  • Experience working across functions and influencing stakeholders in a matrixed environment
  • Proficiency in Excel and experience with financial systems and analytical tools (e.g., SAP, AFO, Wdesk, Tableau, SQL)

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree and/or a CPA license is desirable but not required
  • Experience leveraging automation, AI, or data tools in financial processes is strongly preferred
  • Self-motivated, intellectually curious, and able to operate effectively in a dynamic, evolving environment

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end financial oversight of assigned insurance and reinsurance portfolios, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial results
  • Lead the accounting, reporting, and control framework for assumed and ceded reinsurance arrangements, including validation of premiums, claims, and reserves
  • Ensure adherence to MAR/SOX requirements, including control design, documentation, and execution
  • Partner with internal and external auditors to support financial statement audits and regulatory compliance
  • Deliver actionable insights on product performance, earnings drivers, and capital impacts to inform business and finance leadership decisions
  • Collaborate with business unit finance, actuarial, and product teams to evaluate new products and enhancements, translating complex insurance activity into clear financial implications
  • Support development of key performance indicators and enhance analytical frameworks to improve financial storytelling
  • Lead and support initiatives to transform accounting and reporting processes through automation, AI tools, and advanced analytics
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce close cycle times, and enhance data quality
  • Contribute to broader Finance transformation efforts, including data strategy, system implementations, and process standardization
  • Partner with Accounting Policy to evaluate and document technical accounting positions related to insurance and reinsurance transactions
  • Support preparation of statutory financial statements, including Blue Book schedules and audited footnotes
  • Maintain strong knowledge of statutory accounting principles and emerging regulatory developments
