About The Position

The Gwinnett County Law Department provides legal services to Gwinnett County, including the Board of Commissioners, County Administrator, County Departments and Offices, and Elected Officials. The Law Department has an opening for one Senior Assistant County Attorney. Senior Assistant County Attorneys serve as legal counsel representing the legal interests of the County and assigned departments and the legal interests of Elected Officials in accordance with federal and state laws and the rules of professional conduct. Senior Assistant County Attorneys are assigned to represent large and/or multiple County Departments, Boards, Authorities, and Elected Officials.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Five years of experience as an attorney
  • Member in good standing with the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice in the Superior Courts of Georgia

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in all aspects of State and Federal litigation, particularly in representing local governments
  • Experience in reviewing and drafting contracts
  • Experience in local government , particularly in matters involving public safety agencies
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Admitted to practice in the Court of Appeals for the State of Georgia, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the Northe rn District of Georgia

Responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice to represented clients, department directors, elected officials, and Boards and Authorities as assigned
  • Attending meetings, researching and assessing legal issues and internal policies and procedures, and providing legal opinions
  • Advising clients on and implementing legal solutions
  • Reviewing, drafting, and interpreting laws, ordinances, regulations, policies, and resolutions and providing advice, information, and training regarding new/and or amended laws and regulations as needed
  • Representing assigned clients in litigation, in both State and Federal courts at the trial and appellate levels; the types of litigation handled by the Law Department include condemnations, tax appeals, nuisance abatement actions, zoning disputes, personal injury suits, employment matters, and civil rights
  • Developing case strategy; reviewing and drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs; handling all aspects of discovery, including preparing and responding to written discovery and taking and defending depositions; negotiating settlements and handling mediations; attending hearings (in-person and remotely) and trials; reviewing and drafting appellate briefs
  • Reviewing, negotiating and drafting contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal laws and to protect the County's interest; and providing legal advice regarding contract terms and enforcement thereof
  • Maintaining a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, case law, policies, and procedures; maintaining awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession
  • Participating in training and continuing education activities; attending and conducting meetings, workshops, and seminars as appropriate
