About The Position

Under limited direction, the Senior Assistant City Attorney performs a variety of professional level duties and responsibilities involving the delivery of legal services of varying complexity. Legal services include direct assistance to the City Attorney on special projects or assignments. Work involves the review and/or preparation of legal documents, the preparation of legal opinions, and the preparation and review of resolutions, ordinances, and other proposed legislation. Preferred responsibilities include real estate transactions, representation of the City on the Code Enforcement Board, and construction related matters.

Requirements

  • A valid State driver's license is required.
  • Possession of a State of Florida license as a practicing attorney and admission to the Florida Bar.
  • Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor Degree or equivalent with admission to the Florida Bar PLUS Five (5) years of professional experience as an attorney in the public sector, particularly at the local government level or an equivalent combination of education.
  • Knowledge of modern legal office practices, procedures, and application of law and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Constitutional Law, Sunshine Law and Public Records Law, and general municipal law among other areas.
  • Knowledge of operations, management, and overall function of the Attorney's Office.
  • Knowledge of legal research and legal software.
  • Knowledge of Federal and Florida laws, local legislation, and administrative law.
  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
  • Knowledge of general office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
  • Demonstrated Skill in organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated Skill in completing tasks given both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated Skill in conducting research and coordinating assigned projects.
  • Demonstrated Skill in drafting legal instruments, proposed legislation, and legal opinions.
  • Demonstrated Skill in assembling and evaluating technical and operational data relating to the department.
  • Demonstrated Skill in formulating conclusions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated Skill in establishing and maintaining strong office relationships.
  • Demonstrated Skill in operating a computer and related software.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts, performs, and assists in various legal research concerning legal problems or projects.
  • Performs assignments independently and makes legal determinations in matters of substantial importance.
  • Prepares or reviews resolutions, ordinances, and other proposed legislation of a complex or unique nature.
  • Prepares or reviews documents of a complex nature.
  • Negotiates, prepares and reviews purchase and sale agreements, contracts, leases and easement documents.
  • Conducts investigations independently and negotiations on behalf of the City to resolve legal problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the City Attorney.
