About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced civil litigation attorney to serve as an Assistant or Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Trial Section’s Employment Unit. The attorney will defend the Commonwealth of Virginia, its agencies, departments, officials, and employees in state and federal courts against employment-related claims, and advise state agencies on employment matters. The position offers public-service work, a variety of legal matters, opportunities for courtroom experience, mentorship, and an emphasis on work-life balance.

Requirements

Admission to the Virginia State Bar.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in time management and the ability to manage a challenging caseload.
Willingness to assist and supervise others.
Ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team in a collegial environment.

Nice To Haves

A minimum of eight to ten years of civil litigation experience in federal or state court is preferred; similar litigation experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

Defend the Commonwealth of Virginia, its agencies, departments, officials, and employees in state and federal courts against employment-related claims.
Advise state agencies on employment-related matters.
Conduct legal research and prepare pleadings, briefs, and legal memoranda.
Develop strategies for defending claims.
Conduct all aspects of discovery, including e-discovery.
Handle motions practice, court appearances, and trial and appellate work.
Provide legal advice to clients.
Provide or receive mentorship while working closely with attorneys in the Unit and Section.
Assist and supervise others.
