Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer

The Mitre Corporation•McLean, VA
•$143,600 - $215,400•Onsite

About The Position

MITRE’s Multi-INT AI Engineering Department seeks an experienced AI, software development, and cloud engineering professional to develop capabilities for mission-focused research and development. The role combines sensors, AI and machine learning, and data engineering to exploit multimodal data, including infrared imagery, hyperspectral imagery, radar, full-motion video, wide-area motion imagery, and 3D data. The Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer independently develops and integrates prototype capabilities combining software, data processing, cloud components, and AI methods. The engineer assesses research for sponsor data and mission problems, builds multimodal data workflows, designs and evaluates AI experiments, and conducts technical studies. The role also works with mission and technical staff to understand constraints and capability gaps, documents findings and recommendations, and may guide project tasks and develop team capabilities. The position requires an active Top Secret/SCI clearance with polygraph and U.S. citizenship. It requires working onsite at least three days per week; the listed work location type is onsite.

Requirements

  • Typically, at least 5 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree, 3 years with a master's degree, or a PhD with relevant experience and ability to contribute immediately at this job step; an equivalent combination of related education and work experience is also accepted.
  • Advanced Python and software engineering skills, including independently designing, testing, and integrating components into working AI prototypes.
  • Hands-on experience developing and deploying capabilities in cloud environments using containers, automated deployment, or infrastructure as code.
  • Experience building multimodal data pipelines and evaluating AI methods with multimodal data.
  • Familiarity with multi-INT workflows and the data access, security, and operational constraints affecting mission work.
  • Ability to learn independently and solve complex technical problems using sound judgment and multiple sources of information.
  • Ability to collaborate with mission and technical staff, communicate findings to varied audiences, and guide project tasks when appropriate.
  • Active U.S. Government-issued Top Secret/SCI clearance with polygraph; U.S. citizenship is required for security-clearance eligibility.
  • Ability to work onsite at least 3 days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience fusing mission data types, such as GEOINT, OSINT, and imagery, and assessing how each source affects technical findings.
  • Experience building mission-focused test and evaluation harnesses for AI tools using mission data.
  • Experience fine-tuning, deploying, or evaluating large language model and agentic AI applications, including in restricted computing environments.
  • Familiarity with government acquisition processes, including an Analysis of Alternatives or other studies that inform sponsor decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop and integrate prototype capabilities combining software, data processing, cloud components, and AI methods, using engineering practices that make them reproducible, testable, and usable.
  • Assess and adapt research from academia and industry to sponsor data and mission problems.
  • Design data ingestion, normalization, and ETL workflows for multimodal data; analyze data from multiple mission sources and identify limitations affecting findings.
  • Select AI methods for mission problems and design experiments to evaluate performance under sponsor-relevant conditions.
  • Define and execute technical studies, including hypothesis development, experiment design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Work with technical and mission staff to understand sponsor constraints, discuss key issues, and identify capability gaps.
  • Document and explain technical approaches, findings, limitations, and recommendations for transition or further investment.
  • Guide project tasks when appropriate, share advanced knowledge, and help grow team capability.
