About The Position

Collins Landing Systems is seeking an experienced Senior Applied Machine Learning Engineer for its Data and Analytics Team, supporting the Wheels and Brakes product line. Drawing on a strong mechanical systems background, the engineer will lead development of data-driven and hybrid, physics-informed models addressing multidisciplinary product considerations including performance, structural behavior, thermal behavior, and vibration. The role collaborates with design, project, sustaining, customer support, and manufacturing engineers, and includes working with customers on technical product decisions. The position leads the development, training, and validation of machine learning models; establishes model validation approaches and performance criteria; and develops data preparation practices for analytics and ML workflows. It also includes mentoring engineers, providing technical recommendations to cross-functional teams, producing engineering reports, and presenting design reviews to internal and external customers. The role is onsite in Troy, Ohio. U.S. citizenship is required; no security clearance is required.

Requirements

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and at least 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field and at least 3 years of experience.
  • Expertise in data analytics workflows, statistical methods, and engineering data interpretation, with a record of solving complex technical challenges.
  • Advanced knowledge of machine learning concepts and demonstrated experience developing, deploying, and validating models for prediction, classification, and anomaly detection.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including structural behavior, dynamics, thermal concepts, and systems performance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under the program or contract.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience building and using physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), physics-guided or constrained learning, and hybrid models combining first-principles and data-driven components.
  • Strong experience with Python for data analysis, including NumPy, Pandas, or PySpark, and familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or Scikit-learn.
  • Expertise with specialized engineering data such as strain gauge, thermal, or flight/aircraft performance datasets.
  • Direct experience using finite element analysis (FEA) for structural, thermal, and vibration analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Drive development, training, and validation of data-driven and physics-informed machine learning models for wheel and brake performance, structural and thermal design, and vibration mitigation and avoidance.
  • Define and standardize validation approaches, acceptance criteria, and performance metrics for analytical and machine learning models across multiple programs.
  • Develop and implement best practices for data curation, cleaning, integration, and preparation for analytics and machine learning workflows.
  • Guide and mentor engineers in data analytics and machine learning methodologies.
  • Lead collaboration with design, reliability, service engineering, and customer support teams to provide data-driven and physics-based recommendations that improve product performance and address customer needs.
  • Create engineering reports, share findings with internal stakeholders, and present design reviews to internal and external customers as required.
  • Assist customers with technical decisions for the products supported.
