About The Position

ISO New England's Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) department is seeking a Senior Applied AI Engineer to support their Grid AI Innovation initiative. This role involves applying cutting-edge artificial intelligence to power system challenges, focusing on grid reliability and resilience. The engineer will operate at the intersection of power systems engineering and enterprise AI, designing, developing, and deploying production-grade AI solutions, including generative AI and agent-based systems, that impact New England's energy infrastructure. Collaboration with stakeholders across Operations, Planning, Markets, and IT is key for identifying use cases, architecting scalable solutions, and ensuring responsible AI practices. This position is ideal for individuals with deep technical expertise in both power systems and modern AI technologies.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with focus on power systems and artificial intelligence.
  • 3+ years of experience in power system operations, planning, or engineering, with demonstrated understanding of RTO/ISO business processes and challenges.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing and deploying AI/ML solutions in production settings.
  • Knowledge and user experience in cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Strong software engineering skills (Python, data pipelines, version control, etc.).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD is preferred.
  • Experience with power system simulation tools (e.g., PSS®E, PSCAD, PowerWorld, DSATools).
  • Experience with generative AI and LLM-based applications (e.g., RAG, tool use, agent frameworks).
  • Familiarity with agent-based architectures, orchestration frameworks, and multi-agent system design.
  • Understanding of MLOps practices (CI/CD, model monitoring, data pipelines).

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy advanced AI/ML solutions to solve complex engineering and business problems, including grid planning workflow automation and AI-powered decision-support systems.
  • Leverage cloud platforms to support large-scale power system simulations and AI/ML workloads.
  • Partner with business units (Operations, Planning, Markets, IT) to analyze business needs, design and prototype solutions, and drive production deployment of scalable AI systems.
  • Engage with leading research organizations (EPRI, DOE National Labs, PSERC, CURENT) and industry partners to advance innovation and adopt emerging technologies.
  • Identify new opportunities for AI adoption, develop prototypes, and translate emerging technologies into practical applications for grid operations and planning.
