About The Position

Edgewater Federal Solutions is seeking a Senior Application Programmer to support an IT program at a major national laboratory. The role provides software engineering and application programming support for the design, development, testing, integration, modernization, and sustainment of complex software systems. Work primarily involves a large C++ codebase running in Linux environments, with potential support for cloud-native and containerized deployment environments. The programmer will work on a multidisciplinary team that may include software engineers, systems engineers, algorithm developers, data analysts, test engineers, cybersecurity personnel, DevOps engineers, project leads, and mission and customer stakeholders. The position supports the development and operation of software systems, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation. It also contributes to modernization initiatives, automated build and release processes, and application deployment using cloud and container technologies when applicable. The role is full-time and on-site, and requires the specified security clearance eligibility and U.S. citizenship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in a relevant STEM field, such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field, and seven years of directly related experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
  • In lieu of a degree, 13 years or more of an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Possess a DOE Q Clearance at start, or a DOD Top Secret clearance with reciprocity to obtain a DOE Q Clearance, and ability to obtain a SCI clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Ability to work on-site full time.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and Linux-based development and deployment environments, including experience with version control, debugging, testing, and performance-aware development practices.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks, communicate progress, and raise risks or blockers in a timely manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong proficiency in developing cloud-ready applications, including containerizing and deploying high-performance, scalable applications in cloud-native or hybrid computing environments, with technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, and OpenShift.
  • Experience with parallelization or optimization of software applications using C++ multithreading, multiprocess execution across multiple CPU or GPU cores, or compiler optimizations.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline technologies.
  • Experience developing, troubleshooting, and maintaining large existing codebases.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, refactor, and modernize software systems using C++ in Linux environments.
  • Apply software engineering principles including object-oriented design, modular architecture, defensive programming, configuration management, and test-driven or test-informed development.
  • Analyze software requirements, clarify technical needs with stakeholders and team members, and translate requirements into maintainable software designs and implementations.
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software issues in distributed, multi-node processing environments.
  • Triage defect reports, reproduce problems, identify root causes, implement fixes, and verify corrections for operational systems.
  • Develop and maintain unit, integration, and regression tests, as well as automated test workflows where appropriate.
  • Participate in software design reviews, code reviews, work planning, demonstrations, and other team engineering activities to deploy software on planned schedules.
  • Contribute to modernization efforts such as code refactoring, build system improvements, containerization, cloud-readiness, automation, and migration away from legacy components.
  • Support CI/CD workflows, automated build pipelines, static analysis, code quality checks, and release processes.
  • Design, deploy, and support applications using cloud and container technologies such as AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes when applicable.
  • Document software designs, interfaces, test results, operational procedures, troubleshooting steps, and other engineering artifacts as needed.
  • Collaborate with team members to improve software quality, system reliability, maintainability, and development efficiency.
