About The Position

Schneider Electric USA, Inc. seeks a Senior Application Engineer in Houston, TX. This role involves architecting and implementing advanced microgrid control systems that integrate solar PV, BESS, diesel gensets, and grid-tied/islanded modes using Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Microgrid Operation and Advisor. The engineer will develop detailed functional specifications, HMI designs, communication architectures, and comprehensive I/O lists (hardware and software) for microgrid projects. Responsibilities include designing and configuring protection and control systems (relays, IEDs, PLCs, HMIs) based on short circuit and arc flash studies, and reviewing schematics for automation and electrical connectivity. The role also requires integrating intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and DERs into automation architectures using protocols like IEC61850, DNP 3.0, Modbus TCP/RTU, PRP, HSR, and RSTP, ensuring robust communication and system reliability. Leading site audits, factory acceptance tests, and commissioning efforts across commercial, industrial, utility, and renewable energy sectors is key, as is mentoring teams on Schneider Electric’s Power Automation System technologies and DER orchestration strategies. Collaboration with commercial, line of business, and customer teams to align technical execution with business objectives is expected. The role will also drive innovation in microgrid optimization strategies such as peak shaving, load shifting, and demand response through advanced control logic and real-time energy management. Approximately 45% travel is required (5% international, 40% domestic) for training, assessment, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Progressive post-bachelor’s experience (5 years with bachelor’s, or 3 years with master’s) in microgrid engineering, or related occupation.
  • Experience validating low-voltage switchboard designs and breaker selections for commercial Microgrid systems.
  • Experience in Microgrid automation, DER integration, and power system engineering.
  • Experience creating network communication diagrams for PV systems, BESS systems, generator control systems, and SCADA systems.
  • Experience configuring programmable logic controllers (PLCs), HMI, protection relays, and other IEDs for process improvements.
  • Experience conducting site audits of electrical and generator control systems.
  • Experience collaborating with inverter-based power sources (solar and battery energy storage inverters).
  • Experience developing I/O lists for electrical and control systems, incorporating PLCs, protection systems, and switchgears.
