About The Position

As a Senior Application Developer at Bangor Savings Bank, you will design, build, integrate, and support software solutions for the Bank’s customers and employees. You will address complex technical problems, work with business and technology teams, and help create secure, reliable, maintainable, and practical solutions. The role calls for strong software engineering skills and a collaborative, curious, accountable, and customer-focused approach. The position also supports the team’s thoughtful adoption of AI-assisted and agentic development tools. You will use and evaluate these tools where they are useful, validate their output, and share what you learn while helping colleagues explore evolving practices at their own pace. This role is based in Bangor, Maine, and requires on-site work at least three days per week. Success involves sound technical judgment, ownership of outcomes, effective collaboration, knowledge sharing, and knowing when AI can help and when human judgment is essential.

Requirements

  • Significant professional experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting production software, typically gained through 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including application design, APIs and integrations, databases, source control, testing, debugging, and code review.
  • Ability to independently deliver complex software solutions and work effectively with incomplete or ambiguous requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, and ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
  • Experience working within a structured software development lifecycle.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to other developers.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or comparable tools.
  • Ability to critically review, test, and validate AI-generated code rather than accepting generated output at face value.
  • Understanding of security, privacy, quality, and maintainability considerations associated with AI-assisted development.
  • Collaborative, respectful, accountable, and customer-focused approach aligned with Bangor Savings Bank’s culture and values.
  • Ability to build trust, value different perspectives, and contribute positively to teams.
  • Ability to advocate for change without dismissing existing experience or differing perspectives, particularly as the team explores AI-assisted development and new ways of working.
  • Curiosity, adaptability, humility, and commitment to continuous learning as software engineering evolves.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

  • Experience working in financial services or another security-conscious, regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, integrate, deploy, maintain, and support secure and reliable software solutions.
  • Independently take complex application and integration work from requirements through implementation and production support.

  • Work with APIs, databases, integrations, services, user interfaces, automation, and cloud technologies.
  • Troubleshoot complex application and production issues and pursue durable solutions.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools for coding, analysis, debugging, testing, refactoring, documentation, and solution design.
  • Use coding agents and emerging agentic development techniques where they add value while retaining human accountability for the final solution.
  • Review and validate AI-generated solutions for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies based on usefulness, reliability, security, cost, and fit for the Bank.
  • Mentor developers through code review, pairing, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Help teammates build confidence with evolving development practices while recognizing different levels of experience and comfort with AI.
  • Represent Application Development on projects and communicate technical concepts, alternatives, risks, and tradeoffs clearly.
