About The Position
DNA Production, LLC is seeking multiple Sr. Animal Scientists in Pierre, SD. This role involves working with senior leadership to develop improved practices in feeding, housing, sanitation, and parasite and disease control of pigs, sows, or gilts. The position also includes overseeing feeding, watering, and ventilation systems, and advising senior leadership on enhanced products and techniques to improve swine health, quality, and production. Responsibilities also encompass assessing animal health conditions, participating in the administration of treatments and vaccines, overseeing the selection and movement of animals, and data entry using a PDA or computer. Depending on the specific role, duties may include active participation in various feeding methods, documentation of sow and gilt activity, and estrus detection and insemination of sows and gilts. The role also involves assessing animal selection and breeding practices to boost production efficiency and animal quality.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine, agricultural sciences, engineering, or an animal-based agriculture-related field (foreign equivalent accepted).
- 2 years' as an animal scientist, farmworker, or related occupation.
- 2 years' experience working with commercial swine or cattle operations.
Responsibilities
- Develop improved practices in feeding, housing, sanitation, and parasite and disease control of pigs, sows, or gilts.
- Oversee feeding, watering, and ventilation systems.
- Advise senior leadership about improved products and techniques that could enhance swine health quality and production.
- Engage in assessment of animal health conditions.
- Participate in administration of treatment and vaccines.
- Oversee selection and movement of all animals marked or moved.
- Enter data regarding such assessments using a PDA or computer.
- Engage in active participation in gruel feeding, mat feeding, and handfeeding.
- Document all sow and gilt activity on each sow card.
- Participate in estrus detection of sows and gilts and insemination of sows and gilts.
- Assess animal selection and breeding practices to increase production efficiency and improve animal quality.
