About The Position

Wake Forest University is hiring a Senior Analytics Engineer to join a small team of analytic practitioners within Information Systems serving stakeholders across the university, including academic units, enrollment, advancement, finance, HR, and student life. The role combines stakeholder consultation with end-to-end solution delivery: understanding data questions, shaping requirements and architecture, building pipelines, models, and dashboards, and supporting adoption. The team is moving from a legacy reporting environment toward a modern lakehouse architecture using AWS and Microsoft Fabric, and shifting from low-code integration toward spec-driven Python development. The role will contribute to this platform migration, help evaluate future warehouse options, and participate in AI projects as they develop. The position is hybrid by default, with approximately one day per week on campus, and offers training, certification, and time to explore new tools. This is an individual-contributor role. The employee works as part of a team, applies established standards, and develops their skills, receiving guidance from senior team members and management on more complex tasks. A bachelor's degree and at least five years of relevant professional experience are required. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of non-immigrant or immigrant visa status through Wake Forest University.

Requirements

  • At least five years of hands-on professional experience building a data warehouse, data pipeline, or analytics solutions.
  • Strong SQL skills, including writing, debugging, and optimizing complex queries against large datasets.
  • Working proficiency in Python, or clear evidence of the ability to achieve proficiency quickly.
  • Experience with a cloud data platform such as AWS, Azure, or GCP and with modern warehouse or lakehouse patterns.
  • Experience building reports and dashboards in a modern BI tool such as Power BI, Tableau, Cognos, or Looker.
  • Ability to communicate across technical and non-technical audiences and work patiently with people who are not data professionals.
  • Self-starter able to make progress on ambiguous problems by asking good questions without relying on a prescribed task list.
  • Genuine interest in learning technologies not previously used.
  • Bachelor's degree; field of study is open.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Workday, particularly Prism or Reports.
  • Higher education experience or experience with student, finance, or HR data domains.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, AWS Lake Formation, or Athena.
  • Integration platform experience with SnapLogic, Informatica, Fivetran, dbt, or Airflow.
  • Practical experience applying LLMs or AI agents to engineering or analytics work.
  • Experience with data governance, data quality, or master data management.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with campus stakeholders to understand their questions and gather requirements before defining solutions.
  • Advise university units on data architecture, data management, and governance practices.
  • Coach and support customers through implementation and adoption.
  • Design and develop data pipelines, models, and analytic products spanning source systems, including Workday SIS, Finance, and HCM.
  • Write, debug, and optimize complex, performant, maintainable SQL queries against large datasets.
  • Build and tune curated data layers in AWS Lake Formation/Athena and Microsoft Fabric, and deliver reporting through Power BI and other analytic tools.
  • Own solutions through discovery, design, build, test, deployment, support, and iteration.
  • Help transition integration work from SnapLogic toward spec-driven Python development using AI-assisted tooling.
  • Contribute to decisions about future warehouse direction, including evaluation of Redshift and Snowflake.
  • Help retire legacy Cognos reporting responsibly while minimizing disruption to current users.
  • Take on AI projects and assess which applications genuinely improve work.
  • Follow other job-related instructions and perform duties reasonably assigned by the supervisor.

Benefits

  • Training and certification support.
  • Time to explore new tools.
  • Hybrid work by default, with approximately one day per week on campus.
  • Opportunity to shape a platform migration and work across varied university stakeholder problems.
