Job Description: The Senior Analyst, Import/Export Classification, is an important contributor within Microchip’s Global Trade Compliance (GTC) group. This position is responsible for supporting the import and export classification of Microchip’s products by accurately applying Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes, Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs), and other regulatory classifications. The Senior Analyst demonstrates advanced knowledge of trade compliance regulations, handles more complex classification assignments, and supports junior staff as needed. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in global import/export classification, solid analytical skills, and the ability to interpret technical documentation to support compliant product classifications.

Requirements

  • 7–9 years of directly related experience, or a bachelor’s degree with 3–5 years of directly related experience, in global trade compliance with demonstrated proficiency in export classification.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), Commerce Control List (CCL), and U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification principles.
  • Experience classifying products under U.S. export and import regulations, including ECCN, Schedule B, and HTS, with the ability to apply classification principles accurately and consistently.
  • Ability to interpret technical product information such as datasheets, schematics, block diagrams, and related engineering documentation to support product classification decisions.
  • Experience supporting the classification of electronics, semiconductors, or other technical products.
  • Experience preparing, supporting, or submitting Commodity Classification Automated Tracking System (CCATS) requests, including encryption-related submissions.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, product management, manufacturing, logistics, and other stakeholders to gather and assess information needed for classification.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with close attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain classification decisions and compliance requirements to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience using trade compliance tools, government systems, or ERP platforms relevant to classification and recordkeeping.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Candidates are required to provide proof of either US citizenship, Permanent US residency or classification as a protected individual as defined in 8 USC 1324b (a) (3).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Business/Trade, Supply Chain/Logistics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), U.S. Munitions List (USML), and related jurisdiction/classification concepts.
  • Knowledge of international classification systems and regulatory requirements, including EU, UK, ASEAN, or other non-U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Familiarity with logistics processes, import regulations, export filing requirements, and international shipping procedures.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and experience with reporting, analytics, or data visualization tools such as Tableau.

Responsibilities

  • Product Classification: Apply U.S. HTS, ECCN, Schedule B, and international codes (EU, UK, ASEAN, etc.) to Microchip products, following established procedures and using advanced regulatory knowledge.
  • Review and analyze complex product specifications to ensure accurate product classification, including handling challenging or nuanced cases and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Draft and submit Commodity Classification Automated Tracking System (CCATS) requests, including supporting documentation for encryption items.
  • Draft and submit U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) binding ruling requests.
  • Collaboration & Team Support: Work with engineering, product management, manufacturing, logistics, and sales teams to obtain technical data and product specifications required for accurate classification.
  • Support junior analysts by sharing expertise and guidance as needed, contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Provide classification-related support and guidance to customers.
  • Compliance & Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate classification records and supporting documentation in accordance with U.S. government and company requirements.
  • Participate in periodic audits and reviews to ensure ongoing compliance with global trade regulations.
  • Stay current on classification requirements and regulatory changes as directed by management.
