About The Position

The Senior Analyst, Global Methane Research & Analytics will conduct complex data analysis and literature reviews, maintain models and databases, and develop reports and other means of disseminating findings and information in support of Energy Transition’s and EDF’s goals of reducing methane emissions. This position works with international institutions, many of which are in Asia-Pacific and Europe, and this critical work supports imperative organizational energy transition work by researching and analyzing emissions from the oil and gas industry and providing data that is utilized to advocate at the regional, country and international levels for stringent oil and gas regulation. The Senior Analyst reports to the Senior Director, Research & Analytics, Energy Transition and will provide vital support for senior-level staff on EDF’s Energy Transition-Asia team.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of related experience in environmental science, energy policy, policy analysis, environmental advocacy, or related fields and a Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
  • Programming proficiency (e.g., R, Python, Matlab, SQL) required.
  • Knowledge about environmental issues associated with the oil and gas industry or experience with air emissions issues or data.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and processes and strong project management skills.
  • Proactive with exceptional personal organization, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work independently and to support a multi-disciplinary team across multiple time zones, using independent judgement required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to summarize and translate scientific information appropriately for a variety of audiences, from senior scientists to the public.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master's degree in engineering, economics, environmental science, or other field with strong quantitative methods may substitute for up to 2 years relevant professional experience.
  • Experience with database software and geo-spatial analysis using ArcGIS preferred.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, emissions modeling, or air dispersion modeling is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex analyses of datasets on emissions from oil and gas facilities and activity, such as the IEA Methane Tracker; data from the Australian, Korean, Japanese and Southeast Asian energy and industry regulatory authorities, European Commission, and other countries; and information from other sources or stakeholders.
  • Conduct more complex research on energy policies and industry trends; analyze policy pathways and progress toward the 30X30 methane goal and other country, regional or operator-specific methane goals or targets; and create summary briefings for the Asia-Pacific region on relevant and timely topics.
  • Develop, maintain, expand, and update EDF’s models and databases used to evaluate the climate influence of natural gas leakage and mitigation scenarios.
  • Design and develop rigorous analytics in support of regulatory advocacy; analyze regulatory proposals; and perform comparative analysis of existing regulations from various jurisdictions, including recommended control strategies, emission reduction efficacy and cost benefit analyses.
  • Participate in advancing EDF’s Organizational Effectiveness and Culture (OEC) goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.
  • Manage multi-stakeholder projects and associated deliverables.
  • Research methane abatement technologies, their costs, and optimal uses.
  • Actively develop correspondence, reports, factsheets, and blog posts for general audiences on the topics of focus; respond to requests for information; and help coordinate activities among staff.
  • Perform literature reviews and research, analyzing and synthesizing information on a variety of topics to inform and support EDF’s oil and gas advocacy efforts.
  • Compile, keep current, synthesize, and disseminate scientific and gray literature on methane and other air emissions from natural gas systems for EDF scientists, economists, attorneys, and policy specialists.
  • Represent EDF in meetings with regulators, industry representatives, NGO partners and other stakeholders.
  • Support other "rapid response" and project development efforts on an as-needed basis.
  • Additional relevant responsibilities as assigned.
