Senior AM Equipment Engineer

Divergent•Torrance, CA

About The Position

Divergent is seeking a hands-on Additive Manufacturing Equipment Engineer to help transition next-generation Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) production equipment from development into high-volume manufacturing. The role helps ensure production equipment is stable, reliable, scalable, and capable of meeting safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives. As the manufacturing footprint expands across multiple factories, the engineer will troubleshoot machine-level problems and help turn solutions into standards deployed across the equipment fleet. The role works alongside senior equipment engineers to stabilize new machines, improve reliability, and develop standards for fleet growth. The engineer takes technical responsibility for assigned production equipment after engineering qualification, working across equipment engineering, manufacturing, quality, reliability, and operations. The role involves independent technical judgment in solving complex equipment issues and improving standard work with input from a manager and senior engineers. It also supports equipment qualification, installation, commissioning, production readiness, and the transition of newly developed equipment into sustained manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology subject to U.S. export controls.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • 4–6 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, reliability engineering, or advanced production environments.
  • Experience supporting the launch or ramp of production equipment or processes.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and/or controls systems.
  • Experience with structured root cause analysis methodologies, such as RCCA, 5 Whys, or Fishbone.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, quality, and maintenance teams.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) or other metal additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience in aerospace, automotive, semiconductor, or other high-volume precision manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of AS9100, AMS, PPAP, APQP, or equivalent quality systems.
  • Exposure to equipment reliability engineering, OEE improvement, or preventative maintenance programs.
  • Experience working with machine sensor data or manufacturing analytics.
  • Experience with controls systems, PLCs, industrial automation, or machine integration.
  • Experience supporting capital equipment installation or commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Support the transition of newly developed production equipment from qualification into sustained manufacturing.
  • Drive improvements in equipment reliability, throughput, yield, and overall equipment effectiveness on assigned machines.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and process-related issues affecting production.
  • Apply and improve engineering standards to ensure consistency across production assets.
  • Provide production feedback to design engineering on machine performance, reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Support technical investigations and Root Cause Corrective Actions for equipment failures, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring failures.
  • Contribute to cost reduction through equipment optimization and process improvements.
  • Support capital equipment installation, commissioning, and production-readiness activities, including factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and production ramp.
  • Act as a technical resource for operators, technicians, and peers.
  • Track assigned L-PBF equipment performance against established baselines and improve machine capability across safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Execute standardized equipment configurations and flag deviations between machines and factories.
  • Improve preventative maintenance procedures and develop standard work, maintenance procedures, and calibration documentation with manager input.
  • Improve L-PBF equipment capability to increase throughput, yield, dimensional accuracy, repeatability, utilization, and operational efficiency.
  • Support qualification and validation activities for new equipment, process changes, and manufacturing improvements.
  • Collaborate with controls, software, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to resolve technical challenges.
  • Support Design for Manufacturability and Design for Reliability initiatives.
  • Support configuration management and engineering change implementation across the production fleet.
  • Document lessons learned for future machine deployments.
  • Support qualification of additive manufacturing equipment and processes to aerospace and automotive quality requirements.
  • Support Quality Engineering during audits, customer reviews, and process validation activities.
  • Analyze manufacturing defects and equipment-related quality issues and implement engineering solutions.
  • Follow AS9100, AMS, PPAP, and internal quality system requirements.
  • Execute assigned scopes within capital equipment projects supporting factory growth and contribute to technical readiness plans for new equipment.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary, equity plan, and discretionary results-based incentive bonus opportunities.
  • Paid vacation, sick time, company holidays, and a year-end shutdown.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Health and wellness benefits, including HMO and Premium PPO options.
  • Company-sponsored life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Reimbursement opportunities for learning and development initiatives.
