About The Position

As part of Samsara’s Marketing Data and Analytics (MDA) Engineering team, this role shapes the technical roadmap alongside Business Intelligence and Data Science peers. The engineer builds the data foundation for AI and self-serve analytics by architecting Databricks pipelines, Gold Layer tables, and semantic models, and by turning ambiguous business challenges into useful data products, autonomous agents, and cross-functional automation. The role is open to candidates residing in the United States. The position combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership. It owns marketing data infrastructure and its reliability, supports trusted sales and marketing metrics, leads complex initiatives across teams, and mentors engineers and analysts. It also advances AI-enabled products and workflows, including integrations, retrieval pipelines, and evaluation practices, while ensuring AI-generated code is reviewed and verified before production. Samsara describes its work as helping digitize physical operations and improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The company offers a flexible, employee-led remote model, with office work also available and location requirements specified when relevant. Compensation includes a base salary range of $137,445–$231,000 per year, an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, and potential ongoing refresh grants tied to performance, subject to plan terms. The role is also eligible for performance-based bonus or variable pay and equity as described in the posting.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or AI engineering, including deep hands-on data engineering experience.
  • Expert-level Python and SQL skills, with strong hands-on data modeling and dbt experience.
  • Deep experience with data warehouse and lakehouse architectures, ETL/ELT, and the modern data stack, including hands-on Databricks or a similar platform such as Snowflake or BigQuery.
  • Experience building semantic layers and structured documentation optimized for AI ingestion and agentic workflows.
  • Regular use of agentic coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, with responsibility for verifying and owning AI-generated output.
  • Experience building, shipping, evaluating, and monitoring LLM or agent systems in production.
  • A track record of leading complex, cross-team data initiatives, including independently gathering requirements from technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting Marketing, Sales, or Product teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Databricks and building AI agents within its ecosystem.
  • Software engineering background beyond data or AI engineering, with a record of turning ambiguous, unfamiliar problems into well-architected delivered solutions.
  • Expertise in data visualization and building dashboards for sales and marketing KPIs.
  • Familiarity with go-to-market data and systems, including CRM such as Salesforce, marketing automation, web analytics, and MarTech tools.

  • Translate ambiguous business questions from Marketing, Sales, and R&D into clear requirements and scalable solutions, working autonomously and influencing decisions with data and sound reasoning.
  • Lead complex, cross-team initiatives end to end, including quickly establishing data pipelines and integrations, managing risks across dependent teams, and owning reliability and data quality.
  • Act as the senior technical lead on the team’s hardest problems, raise engineering and code-review standards, remove cross-team bottlenecks, and mentor engineers and analysts.
  • Build AI-enabled data products and agents, including integrations and retrieval pipelines, and establish evaluation practices to keep them reliable and trustworthy.
  • Identify and automate manual workflows with AI across Marketing and go-to-market teams, taking ideas from concept through prototype to production and influencing organizational roadmaps.
  • Deliver high-quality Python and SQL, increasingly using agentic coding tools while reviewing and verifying AI-generated work before production.
