About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. The primary purpose of the Labor Section is to act as advisor and legal representative to the North Carolina Department of Labor. NCDOL's mission is to foster a safe, healthy, fair and productive North Carolina. NCDOL has multiple divisions and bureaus including Occupational Safety and Health, Elevators and Amusement Devices, and Wage and Hour. The primary purpose of this position is to provide litigation and pre-litigation support to the Labor Section Head and 6 other attorneys in the section. Work includes: • Provide pre-litigation and litigation support to the Section Head and 6 other attorneys in the section, including formatting briefs, generating table of authorities, compiling trial preparation materials. • Process travel reimbursements and supply orders. • Process daily mail. • Open and close casefiles, organize and scan them according to established protocol. • Enter information in case management system. • Manage electronic calendar for court events and deadlines. The recruitment range for this position is limited to $38,516 to $48,000 regardless of an applicant qualifying for a higher salary. Management prefers paralegal certification, current notary credentials and government or law firm experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide pre-litigation and litigation support to the Section Head and 6 other attorneys in the section, including formatting briefs, generating table of authorities, compiling trial preparation materials.
  • Process travel reimbursements and supply orders.
  • Process daily mail.
  • Open and close casefiles, organize and scan them according to established protocol.
  • Enter information in case management system.
  • Manage electronic calendar for court events and deadlines.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support to the Section Head and six attorneys in the Section.
  • Draft letters, memos, labels, briefs, motions, orders, petitions, answers, and a variety of other legal documents.
  • Prepare exhibits for cases or filings.
  • Set up and manage files (including the use of Legal Case Tracker or any similar program) during the course of a case.
  • Assist in case preparation by copying or downloading cases and statutes, scanning documents and pleadings to PDF format for storage in the appropriate electronic case folder, uploading to Legal Case Tracker or any similar program.
  • E-file court or administrative tribunal filings.
  • Assemble exhibit notebooks for cases with indices and tabs for copies of exhibits the attorney plans to introduce into evidence.
  • Process criminal briefs including: obtain the trial transcript and input due dates on the section calendar, format briefs and generate tables of authorities.
  • Copy and scan of documents (high volume).
  • Fill out all forms necessary for advance travel approval and for post¬ travel reimbursement.
  • Maintain paper and electronic files in an organized manner.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Process files for archiving in accordance with the archive schedule.
  • Track office supplies on hand, and reorder as needed.
  • Answer the telephone and direct calls and public inquiries to the appropriate agency or attorney.
  • Must have knowledge of the general jurisdictional responsibilities of the client agencies of the Section.
  • Greet visitors to our office.
  • Determines visitor’s needs and direct the visitor to the proper waiting area.
  • Have telephone contact with other employees from the North Carolina Department of Justice (NCDOJ) and client agencies, the general public, the private bar, and from corporate counsel, businesspeople, and other state and local government employees.
  • Handle any special projects which might arise to meet the needs of the NCDOJ.
  • Perform any special projects or additional duties assigned by the Labor Section Head or the Civil Division Head.
