About The Position

Nationwide, a Fortune 100 company, is seeking a Sr Actuary, P&C Reserving to join the General Liability and Umbrella Reserving team within the P&C Commercial Lines and NWAG organization. This role is crucial for supporting profitable growth and long-term financial strength. It offers high impact, leadership responsibility, and visibility to actuarial and business leadership. The position allows for ownership of meaningful reserving work, influencing decisions across Commercial Lines and NWAG portfolios, and advancing the organization's use of actuarial insight. The role is ideal for an experienced actuarial professional who enjoys complex reserving work, applying judgment to long-tailed casualty portfolios, and translating actuarial analysis into business insight. The strongest candidates will be technically credible, independently driven, comfortable with imperfect data, and energized by mentoring others and partnering with leaders across the P&C enterprise. This position can be staffed remotely for qualified candidates.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of P&C actuarial reserving techniques, particularly for long-tailed casualty lines such as General Liability and Umbrella.
  • Demonstrated experience leading reserve studies and evaluating the adequacy of reserves for complex or multi-segment portfolios.
  • Ability to combine quantitative analysis with actuarial judgment when data is incomplete, volatile, or affected by changing business conditions.
  • Proficiency with actuarial and data tools such as Excel, SQL, R, Python, SAS, Arius, or similar platforms; experience with automation, reproducibility, and visualization is valued.
  • Ability to challenge, refine, and clearly document assumptions, methodologies, and recommendations.
  • FCAS designation required.
  • P&C actuarial experience in commercial lines, casualty, reserving, or a closely related analytical area; experience with General Liability and Umbrella is a plus.
  • Ability to work directly with business partners and serve as a thought leader on complex actuarial topics.
  • Proven ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-actuarial audiences, both in writing and verbally.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills across Actuarial, Claims, Finance, Risk, Pricing, Product, Underwriting, and Technology.
  • Comfort presenting recommendations, responding to challenge, and influencing decisions with sound actuarial judgment.
  • Demonstrated project leadership, independent ownership, and the ability to navigate a changing environment.
  • Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, data science or similar background requiring modeling, programming, or quantitative analysis preferred.
  • Actuarial designation required, generally as an FCAS.
  • Generally, eight or more years of actuarial experience.
  • Expert knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, actuarial models, actuarial software and databases; expert knowledge of company operations, products, systems and actuarial methodologies; expert knowledge of company, industry, and regulatory practices.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office products, analytical software, and programming languages.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, execution, review, and communication of reserve analyses for assigned General Liability and Umbrella business, including quarterly, annual, and ad hoc studies at the line, segment, program, and portfolio levels.
  • Manage a business and grouping of reserves, applying sound actuarial judgment to evaluate reserve adequacy, volatility, uncertainty, and key drivers of change.
  • Lead the selection, application, and documentation of actuarial methods and assumptions.
  • Assess incomplete, noisy, or changing data and determine when additional diagnostics, alternative methods, scenario analysis, or management judgment are needed.
  • Monitor and interpret emerging experience, including severity, frequency, claim closure patterns, social inflation, large loss activity, litigation trends, reinsurance changes, exposure shifts, and claims-handling developments.
  • Translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for Commercial Lines, NWAG, Claims, Finance, Risk, Pricing, Underwriting, and Product leaders.
  • Partner with Pricing, Underwriting, and Product teams to strengthen connectivity between reserving insights, rate adequacy, underwriting strategies, and portfolio management.
  • Provide thought leadership on reserving practices, methodologies, assumptions, diagnostics, and emerging casualty trends.
  • Help evolve reserving tools, data, and processes by partnering with Actuarial Modernization, Data, and Technology teams to improve automation, reproducibility, controls, and visualization.
  • Acts as technical expert of actuarial methodologies allowing the ability to source and manipulate data within standard requirements.
  • Identifies new ways to utilize data driving overall strategic vision.
  • Conducts complex analyses adhering to actuarial standards by selecting appropriate data sources, making assumptions, recognizing considerations, and developing recommendations.
  • Accountable for resolving unreasonable results/non-optimal solutions using experience and professional judgment.
  • Analysis conducted will be used to influence broad strategic vison of Nationwide.
  • Accurately documents assumptions, methods, sources and considerations in an organized fashion.
  • Creates cohesive presentations and recommendations of actuarial findings that are suitable for technical and non-technical audiences at the OCFO leadership level.
  • May professionally represent company's position with regulators, auditors and external vendors.
  • May negotiate within defined parameters.
  • Responsible for strategic development and oversite of multiple work plans ensuring accurate and timely delivery of product.

  • Advises on strategic data mining techniques used to identify new relationships in data.
  • Makes recommendations on data and software packages that help drive strategic vision of P&C actuarial and business success.
  • Has expert knowledge of modeling, predictive modeling, and software applications.
  • Consults and provides expert advice on new or enhanced product development opportunities, including discussions on data needed for analysis, coding implications and opinions of the viability and profitability of proposals.
