About The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and service-oriented Senior Accountant to support multiple churches and nonprofit organizations throughout Southern Maryland. This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys building relationships, serving mission-driven organizations, and helping clients strengthen their financial operations. The ideal candidate will have strong nonprofit accounting experience, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple client relationships simultaneously. Experience working directly with churches or faith-based organizations is a significant plus. Following the initial onboarding and probationary period, this position will transition to a hybrid work schedule. As a Senior Accountant, you will serve as a trusted financial resource to a portfolio of nonprofit and church clients. You will oversee core accounting functions, assist leadership teams with financial decision-making, support audits and compliance, and help implement best practices that improve operational efficiency and financial transparency. Requirements

  • Serve as a proactive advisor to clients by anticipating needs and recommending practical financial solutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field required.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience required; public accounting and/or nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations required.
  • Experience working with churches, ministries, or faith-based organizations is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial reporting, audits, grant reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with both clients and internal teams.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for multiple clients, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
  • Maintain accurate general ledgers and ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports, budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Assist churches and nonprofit leadership teams with budgeting and financial planning initiatives.
  • Allocate payroll, shared expenses, and overhead costs across programs, ministries, and grants.
  • Monitor cash flow, reserves, and investment activity.
  • Support annual audits, reviews, and tax filings, including nonprofit compliance reporting.
  • Ensure timely processing and review of payroll, accounts payable, and related financial activities.
  • Maintain and improve internal accounting controls and financial procedures.
  • Build strong relationships with church leadership, nonprofit executives, boards, and program staff.
  • Assist clients in developing efficient accounting systems and operational workflows.
  • Support preparation of financial information for board meetings, leadership presentations, and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with external payroll providers, auditors, vendors, and financial partners as needed.
  • Mentor and support junior accounting staff by providing guidance, training, and technical expertise.
  • Communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in internal initiatives and cross-functional projects that support organizational growth and client success.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, technology enhancements, and best practice development.
