About The Position

Posit is seeking a Senior Accountant to keep the company’s books accurate, timely, and audit-ready while improving how the Accounting team operates. The role reports to an Accounting Manager and works closely with FP&A, Tax, Payroll, AP/AR, Engineering/IT, and external auditors. The Senior Accountant owns assigned accounting areas, serves as their subject matter expert, and prepares financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting analysis. The role also researches and documents technical accounting positions for complex or non-routine transactions, leads accounting projects and system changes, improves processes through automation, and maintains strong internal controls. The Senior Accountant supports the close calendar, audits, and control testing; collaborates across teams on data flows, system changes, controls, and close dependencies; mentors less experienced colleagues; and presents regularly to the team and stakeholders. During the first year, the role progresses from onboarding and taking ownership of assigned reconciliations and journal entries to independently preparing statements and analyses, implementing process improvements and automation, leading a project or system change, and becoming the recognized subject matter expert for an expanded set of accounting areas. Posit is a Public Benefit Corporation and Certified B Corp focused on open-source software for data science, scientific research, and technical communication. The company is profitable and describes its business model as sustainable, with more than 50% of engineering dedicated to open-source software. Posit is a distributed team, with the option to work from its Boston office. The hiring range is $112,500–$148,500 USD in base salary for work performed in the United States.

Requirements

  • Independently run month-end close and prepare financial statements for multiple areas, including complex or non-routine transactions, with limited review.
  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite or a related ERP, including journal entries, reconciliations, saved searches, and running the close in the system.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas such as lookups, nested logic, pivots, and array formulas for reconciliations and analysis.
  • Day-to-day experience using an AI tool for analysis, automation, or documentation, with sound judgment in validating its output.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and the ability to clearly explain accounting decisions and the reasoning behind them.
  • Understanding of people, process, and system controls.
  • Track record of leading a project or process improvement.
  • Strong collaboration, clear communication, sound judgment, openness to feedback, and ability to stay positive under pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience extending NetSuite and AI tooling, such as saved searches, workflows, or scripting, to deliver data faster and mitigate risk.
  • Experience with accounting-adjacent functional areas and technologies, such as revenue, billing, or subledger systems.
  • Familiarity with Posit’s entity structure, close calendar, policies, and systems connecting Accounting with the rest of the business, or curiosity to learn them quickly.
  • Experience with large-project planning, including creating major project plans, estimating well, and explaining confidence in delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reconciliation schedules, and supporting flux, variance, and trend analyses for assigned areas.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for assigned accounting areas, researching and documenting technical accounting positions for complex or non-routine transactions.
  • Lead accounting projects and system changes from planning through delivery.
  • Identify and implement improvements to accounting practices, including automation that accelerates data delivery and reduces risk.
  • Own internal controls for assigned areas; identify deficiencies, design and implement solutions, and improve team practices.
  • Partner with FP&A, Payroll, Tax, AP/AR, and Engineering/IT on data flows, system changes, internal controls, and month-end close dependencies.
  • Support internal and external audits and testing of people, process, and system controls.
  • Mentor less experienced teammates by reviewing their work and explaining accounting reasoning.
  • Present regularly to the Accounting team and stakeholders.
  • Take over and complete assigned reconciliations and journal entries according to the close calendar, with reviewer sign-off.
  • Prepare assigned financial statements and flux analyses independently and present variance analysis explaining key drivers.
  • Contribute assigned inputs to budget schedules with supporting detail and assumptions.
  • Enhance or redesign reconciliations with substantial backup and clear explanations.
  • Design and deliver automation using NetSuite, Excel, and/or AI tools to reduce close or reporting effort and provide data to stakeholders faster.
  • Take on additional accounting responsibilities and own an expanded set of areas while meeting close deadlines.
