About The Position

Community Builders of Kansas City (CBKC) is the City’s largest urban core developer, strengthening families and transforming communities by providing more than 700 housing units, developing more than 500,00 square feet of commercial space and owning and operating more than 200,00 square feet of space including providing employment opportunities in retail, dining, grocery, banking, and health and social services. Since 1991, CBKC has invested $300 million in urban renewal, earning recognition and respect on the national community development stage. CBKC is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to support the day-to-day general accounting processes by ensuring the integrity and accuracy of all cash management activities including accounting activity across approximately ten (10) entities that are completed by outside accounting firms. This is an on-site position in Kansas City, MO.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred.
  • Master’s Degree or CPA certification a plus.
  • 5-7 years of experience of accounting experience preferably in nonprofit, property management, or construction accounting.
  • Prior experience overseeing accounting books for multiple entities helpful.
  • Strong technical aptitude with experience in Microsoft Suite, accounting software platforms, and specifically QuickBooks.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written and comfortable making financial presentations to Board members.
  • High attention to detail and proficient organizational skills to manage multiple tasks at a time.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accuracy and compliance in daily accounting operations and efficiencies.
  • Manage the general ledger, reconciliations, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end close process.
  • Prepare and present financial and cash flow reports for leadership and the Board.
  • Ensure financial reporting complies with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and related compliance activities, including 1099 filings.
  • Perform and review bank, payroll, and account reconciliations.
  • Record payroll activity, including 401k contributions and benefit allocations.
  • Maintain accurate and complete accounting records across all operations.
  • Partner with Finance leadership to develop budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity to support operational needs.
  • Support audit preparation and coordination.
  • Manage revenue recognition, including grants, donations, and accruals.
  • Ensure compliance with donor restrictions and nonprofit reporting requirements.
  • Stay current on relevant nonprofit accounting regulations and legal requirements.
  • Provide financial oversight for multiple business entities, including retail, construction, real estate, and recreational operations.
  • Manage construction and real estate development accounting and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure financial integrity.
  • Improve financial systems, processes, and automation for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support continuous improvement of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Participate in benefits administration and vendor oversight.
  • Partner with leadership and departments to provide financial insight and support strategic goals.
