About The Position

The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing key accounting functions to ensure the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of the church. This role manages the monthly and annual close processes, payroll administration, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulations. The Senior Accountant works closely with ministry leaders, Human Resources, and the Finance Director to support the church's mission through sound financial stewardship.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in accounting and payroll software systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience managing payroll for organizations with multiple departments and employee classifications.
  • Experience leading month-end and year-end close processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with church management systems and fund accounting software is a plus.
  • Experience with nonprofit, church, or ministry accounting preferred.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct and Netchex is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, ensuring accuracy and timely completion.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Analyze financial data and investigate variances.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements, management reports, and board reports.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and church financial policies.
  • Manage the full-cycle payroll process for all church employees, including clergy, ministry staff, and support personnel.
  • Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, tax withholding, deductions, and benefits administration.
  • Maintain payroll records and employee compensation data.
  • Coordinate payroll-related compliance reporting, including W-2s, payroll tax filings, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison with Human Resources regarding compensation changes, employee onboarding, and terminations.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, payroll accounts, credit card accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and reconciling items.
  • Maintain accurate supporting documentation for all accounting transactions.
  • Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Support external audits and financial reviews by preparing requested schedules and documentation.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance accounting efficiency and reporting accuracy.
  • Ensure adherence to church financial policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee, donor, and financial information.
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local regulations affecting nonprofit and religious organizations.
