About The Position

Harris County is seeking a Senior Accountant - Financial Reporting to join a team of dedicated professionals who support the County's commitment to transparency, financial stewardship, and accountability. As a Senior Accountant in this high-impact role, you will help prepare key monthly and annual financial reports, including major components of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), that provide critical financial information to County leadership, departments, auditors, and the public stakeholders. The Senior Accountant, Financial Reporting plays a critical role in Harris County's monthly and annual financial reporting processes. Under the direction of the Financial Reporting Manager, the Senior Accountant performs advanced governmental accounting duties, ensures compliance with GAAP/GASB standards, and collaborates with internal departments and external auditors to deliver accurate, timely, and comprehensive financial information. This position requires excellent analytical skills, strong organizational abilities, effective communication, and an ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting (or related field with required 24 accredited accounting hours).
  • 3–5 years of governmental accounting or relevant public accounting experience with significant governmental exposure.
  • Strong financial statement preparation experience and understanding of governmental accounting principles.
  • Intermediate or advanced Excel skills, including formulas, functions, and pivot tables.
  • Experience with large ERP systems (PeopleSoft experience is a plus) (Minimum 2 years preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to tailor your approach to varied audiences.
  • High attention to detail, initiative, and a solution‑focused mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and maintain productivity in evolving environments.
  • Comfortable working independently in a hybrid environment.
  • Confident managing deadlines during peak reporting periods.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing major annual ACFR reports for Harris County, Flood Control, and Toll Road Authority.
  • Completing monthly financial reporting submitted to Commissioners Court.
  • Coordinating with internal departments and external auditors to gather and verify financial data.
  • Supporting additional annual reporting requirements such as Juvenile Board and Community Supervision filings.
  • Maintaining highly organized documentation and navigating large volumes of financial reporting files.
  • Staying adaptable as accounting standards, processes, and workload evolve-especially during audit season.
