About The Position

The Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager is a hands-on member of the Finance and Accounting team responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the Company's accounting records. This position owns key parts of the month-end close, general ledger, account reconciliations, inventory and cost accounting, and financial reporting. The position supervises Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff and serves as a first-level reviewer of work prepared by other members of the accounting department. Reporting to the Director of Finance & Accounting, the position works closely with Operations, Procurement, Sales, and other departments to ensure that plant, inventory, and customer activity is properly recorded and that management has reliable financial information to run the business. The role supports budgeting, forecasting, lender reporting, audits, and continuous improvement of accounting processes and internal controls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of three to five years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on month-end close, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Solid working knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting.
  • Experience reviewing the work of others, training staff, or leading accounting team members.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, supporting schedules, and variance analysis.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, lookups, and large data sets) and experience with ERP or accounting systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting matters to non-financial employees.
  • Demonstrated integrity and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or CMA, or active progress toward certification.
  • For the Accounting Manager level: five or more years of experience and prior experience supervising or leading accounting staff.
  • Accounting experience in manufacturing, food processing, meat processing, agriculture, or another operationally complex environment.
  • Experience with inventory accounting, cost accounting, and yield or margin analysis.
  • Experience with SAP or another mid-market ERP system.
  • Public accounting (audit or review) experience.
  • Experience supporting lender reporting, covenant compliance, or ERP implementation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries with complete and accurate supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate and execute the month-end and year-end close calendar, ensuring deadlines are met and close tasks are completed accurately.
  • Prepare and review balance sheet account reconciliations and ensure reconciling items are researched and resolved timely.
  • Close subledgers and ensure they reconcile to the general ledger.
  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Company policies.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for review by the Director of Finance & Accounting.
  • Perform budget-to-actual and period-over-period variance analysis and clearly explain significant fluctuations.
  • Extract, compile, and analyze financial and operational data to support internal metrics and key performance indicator reporting.
  • Assist with management, ownership, and lender reporting packages, including covenant compliance calculations.
  • Support the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting activities.
  • Support month-end inventory counts, valuation, and reconciliation.
  • Assist with product costing, yield, and margin analysis across cattle procurement, harvest, and fabrication.
  • Analyze inventory adjustments and variances and work with Operations to research and resolve discrepancies.
  • Review fixed asset additions, disposals, depreciation, and the fixed asset register.
  • Oversee daily accounts payable and accounts receivable activity, including invoice processing, vendor payments, customer billing, cash application, and collections.
  • Review payment runs and changes to vendor and customer master data, and follow verification procedures for new customers, credit requests, and banking-information changes.
  • Help ensure appropriate controls are in place to protect the Company against payment and impersonation fraud (for example, wire, ACH, check, and fraudulent customer or vendor schemes).
  • Monitor daily cash reporting and support cash-flow forecasting.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and support credit and collection efforts.
  • Follow and help strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, and approval procedures that safeguard Company assets.
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for annual financial statement reviews or audits, and serve as a point of contact for external accountants.
  • Support tax and regulatory compliance, including Washington business and occupation (B&O) tax, sales and use tax, property tax, and Form 1099 reporting.
  • Document accounting policies, procedures, and desk instructions and keep them current.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable user of the Company's ERP and accounting systems and help other departments use them effectively.
  • Identify opportunities to automate, streamline, and improve accounting and reporting processes.
  • Build and maintain Excel-based tools, reports, and reconciliation templates that improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Participate in ERP, reporting, and other system projects as assigned.
  • Supervise the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff, including planning, assigning, prioritizing, and directing daily work.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, supporting schedules, and other work prepared by members of the accounting department for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Company policies before final approval.
  • Serve as first-level reviewer of month-end close deliverables, providing constructive feedback and ensuring issues are corrected before submission to the Director of Finance & Accounting.
  • Monitor team deadlines and workloads and follow up to ensure recurring and close tasks are completed on time.
  • Train, coach, and develop team members, and cross-train staff to maintain coverage and strengthen the depth of the department.
  • Serve as a go-to resource for staff on technical accounting, process, and system questions.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and recommendations for corrective action when appropriate.
  • Keep the Director of Finance & Accounting informed of team performance, issues, risks, and recommended changes to accounting processes or policies.
  • Build effective working relationships across departments and serve as a helpful, responsive accounting resource.
