About The Position

Under limited supervision, the Senior Advisor serves undergraduate students in both IMD majors, the BS and BA. Their primary role will be to provide academic advising for the IMD program, such as orientation, mandatory advising, benchmark and degree audits in UAchieve, review of exceptions to policy, general advising, mid semester grade checks, prerequisite checks, course requests, advising notes in TerpEngage, degree clearances, and other administrative program functions as needed. They manage and mentor a student peer advisor and oversee a IMD student organization. Other responsibilities include development of advising policies and contributing to the development and implementation of the program as a whole. and assisting in the planning of and attending recruiting and public facing events such as Henson Week, Maryland Day, Admissions Open Houses, College Career Fairs, Where can Stem Take you, First Look Fair, freshman classes on request, Commencement and other events as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience in academic advising, student services, student affairs, or higher education teaching.
  • Knowledge of the higher education landscape, degree planning and academic policies.
  • Knowledge of curriculum structures, course sequencing, and graduation requirements.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and student privacy regulations.
  • Knowledge of campus resources, support services, and referral processes.
  • Skill in guiding, training, and supporting junior advising staff.
  • Skill in planning and facilitating orientations, workshops, mentoring programs, and student success initiatives.
  • Skill in oral and written interpersonal communication.
  • Skill in organization and time-management to manage multiple student caseloads and competing priorities.
  • Skill in using student information systems, databases, and Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Skill in data tracking and recordkeeping with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to make recommendations to leadership regarding advising processes, curriculum pathways, and student success strategies.
  • Ability to interpret, explain and apply academic policies and procedures.
  • Ability to employ active listening, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to analyze student records, identify barriers to success, and develop action plans.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to support student success.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education or a related field.
  • Experience in administration and program planning.
  • Working knowledge of University of Maryland advising technology.
