About The Position

The Engineering Advising & Student Engagement (EASE) Center has an outstanding opportunity for Senior Academic Adviser to join their team. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Student Academic Services, the Senior Academic Adviser provides advising, programs, and services to support first-year Engineering Undeclared students who are clarifying their academic interests and goals and preparing for entry into majors. Additionally, this position supervises front desk student staff, as well as supports transfer student outreach, recruitment, and successful transition to the College.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social science, science, engineering, or humanities discipline.
  • Three years of academic advising, student counseling, or teaching experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including public speaking and ability to articulate ideas clearly.
  • Ability to provide an emphatic, yet professional and efficient approach to working with students from diverse backgrounds and those with a spectrum of personal and academic challenges.
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement, set priorities, and initiate solutions as a strong independent contributor and collaborative team member.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills including effectively managing various tasks in the context of a fast-paced environment while ensuring attention to detail, accuracy, and quality results.
  • Flexibility to work occasional workday evenings and/or weekend events. Frequency is anticipated to be around 1-2 times a quarter.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with engineering/STEM.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as assigned academic adviser for a caseload of around 325 Engineering Undeclared students.
  • Provide one-on-one developmental advising that includes helping students:
  • Provide Quick Question drop-in advising accessible to all ENGRUD students.
  • Perform outreach and strengths-based advising to students on their advising caseload who are not meeting continuation requirements.
  • Connect with other campus units (Undergraduate Academic Affairs Academic Advising, New Student & Transfer Programs, Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, Office of the University Registrar, Student Athlete Academic Services, University Honors Program, etc.) as applicable to provide holistic advising services to Engineering Undeclared students.
  • Collaborate with Advancement colleagues to plan, market, and execute Engineering Exploration Night, the EASE team’s second-largest annual signature event typically occurring in early winter quarter.
  • Review and assess students' Placement Request Forms to support the placement process of Engineering Undeclared students into engineering majors.
  • Support development and implementation of workshops around topics such as registration and placement preparation.
  • Assist in the delivery of the college's major programs such as Advising & Orientation, Admitted Student Day, Engineering Launch, etc.
  • Support the prospective transfer student population by providing advising services with the overall goal of facilitating an efficient transfer for community college pre-engineering students.
  • Collaborate with the Recruitment & Youth Engagement Program Manager to support outreach and yield efforts for prospective community college transfer students.
  • Collaborate with departmental advisers to support transfer students’ transition into the College of Engineering.
  • Provide support as needed to the engradv email account.
  • Contribute to the process of updating engineering major sample four-year plans annually.
  • Support application review as needed for College of Engineering programs and/or awards (for example, Emerging Leaders in Engineering program, Dean’s Medal).
