About The Position

Greenbone is seeking an experienced Freelance Security Researcher to support challenging projects in vulnerability research, detection, and automation. This is a 100% remote, freelance engagement for independent contractors. The role involves independent work on technically challenging security research and development tasks, including analyzing vulnerabilities, building automated detection systems, designing future analysis technologies, re-implementing exploits, and developing detection methods. Proficiency with security tools, operating systems, Git, and network protocols is essential.

Requirements

• Proven expertise in cybersecurity, gained through several years of hands-on experience across different roles, projects, or research activities.
• Strong coding skills—whether in scripting or compiled languages—with software development being a central part of your daily work.
• A genuine passion for coding, security research, vulnerability analysis, and staying ahead of emerging threats and attack techniques.
• Excellent written English communication skills.
• Motivation to shape and improve software, tooling, and processes for vulnerability detection and automation.
• An independent, structured, and proactive working style, including the ability to quickly understand, work with, and improve existing codebases.

Responsibilities

• Researching and developing code for complex, security-related objectives.
• Independently analyzing vulnerabilities and building systems for their automated detection.
• Designing and implementing technologies for future vulnerability analysis and the detection of new attack vectors.
• Re-implementing publicly available exploits in alternative programming languages.
• Developing detection and testing methods using techniques such as banner grabbing, authenticated protocols, and targeted product testing.
• Working confidently with a diverse range of security tools, operating systems, Git, and network protocols.
