About The Position

Security Officer plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-protected environment for all Travis County employees and visitors. In this position, you will serve as the first line of defense in safeguarding the property, monitoring activity, and responding to situations with professionalism and sound judgment. We're looking for individuals who are attentive, reliable, and committed to upholding high standards of safety and customer service within our facilities. Provides security services during normal business hours or after hours and on weekends and holidays. Ensures doors and windows are locked and secured during non-business hours. Reports security violations and questionable activities. Monitors buildings for damages from flooding, equipment failure or vandalism. This is a temporary, non-benefited position that includes retirement plan eligibility. The average work schedule will not exceed 30 hours per week.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. OR, Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
  • Must maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must maintain CJIS security clearance.
  • Must be flexible to work and provide assistance to other work shifts.
  • Knowledge of standard building security systems, including operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of policies, practices, procedures and methods of assigned function.
  • Knowledge of security surveillance systems operations and capabilities.
  • Skill in interacting positively with the public.
  • Skill in responding effectively to public inquiries, presenting a positive impression of the organization.
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in computer operations, Microsoft Office suites, and digital surveillance systems.
  • Ability to maintain driving guidelines for Travis County.
  • Ability to follow a regular security check schedule.
  • Ability to recognize and report needed repairs, security risks and dangers.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and communicate effectively, as required.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and officials, and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance, directions and information to visitors and County employees/officials.
  • Signs visitors in and out of assigned facilities.
  • Escorts visitors and staff on and off building premises upon request.
  • Provides vehicle and foot patrol.
  • Makes rounds of each floor of assigned building and/or makes rounds by vehicle and foot patrol of assigned buildings.
  • Ensures doors and windows are locked and secured.
  • Monitors security camera systems and verifies proper operation of building electronic door lock systems.
  • Turns off lights not needed for security.
  • Reports security violations, questionable activities and emergencies to appropriate authority.
  • Ensures security lighting and security monitoring systems are functioning.
  • Monitors outside areas for vagrants and other unauthorized personnel.
  • Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, skateboarding or smoking within 15 feet of building exits.
  • Monitors heating and air conditioning systems for proper operation during non-business hours as directed.
  • Checks assigned facilities for leaks, during rainstorms.
  • Monitors buildings for equipment failure or vandalism, notifies proper emergency contacts for repair.
  • Notes building repair and maintenance needs and reports these deficiencies for correction.
  • Conducts patrols in County vehicles and post operations including following all orders as specified per assignment.
  • Attends training and certification courses as needed and as required by the Department, in order to maintain certifications and skills necessary to perform the job.
  • Conducts screening of individuals and property to identify prohibited items at assigned locations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
