About The Position

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) is seeking a Full-Time Security Officer to ensure the safety of all building scholars and staff. This role involves responding to potential threats, maintaining peace and order, patrolling buildings and grounds, monitoring access, and assisting in emergency situations. The Security Officer will work with school staff to create a safe and supportive environment, help resolve disputes, and support emergency drills. This position reports to the Sergeant and is part of the Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association (O.P.B.A.) union. The salary is based on 200 contract days at $31,228.86 annually. The role is non-exempt.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Previous experience in a related school or urban safety and security procedures
  • Individual with mature judgment and a customer service-oriented demeanor
  • Ability to relate to individuals in conflict situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of people of all ages within the school system
  • OPOTC, 120 hours, private police certification, required
  • Must meet departmental physical requirement standards
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student contacts, reports, and investigatory information
  • Skill to work with children that is acceptable to the board of education and community standards
  • Exhibit a positive, helpful, and customer service-oriented demeanor.
  • Place an emphasis on de-escalation when safe, appropriate, and possible to do so.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with other officers, administrators, and staff
  • Computer skills and the ability to learn to operate computer software and operating systems
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally, in writing, in report writing on the phone, and via two-way radio
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision at times

Nice To Haves

  • 40 hours of Mandatory CMSD annual training will be provided

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors, including responses to potential armed threats within the building and on school/grounds.
  • Maintain peace and order by stopping, intervening, or assisting when disturbances, fights, or distractions occur on school/facility property.
  • Patrol buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and trespassing.
  • Monitor and control access to the school/facilities premises, checking visitor identification to ensure only authorized individuals are on the premises.
  • Ensure visitors utilize visitor management systems (i.e., Raptor).
  • Respond to and assist in managing emergency situations such as fires, natural disasters, or medical incidents, coordinating with police and other emergency responders.
  • Work with school staff to create a safe and supportive environment by intervening when disturbances, fights, or distractions occur within buildings or on school grounds.
  • Help resolve disputes, conflicts, and disciplinary issues among students and staff, promoting positive behavior and de-escalating situations.
  • Use force, when necessary, in line with policy.
  • Support emergency drills (Fire, Tornado, Severe Weather, Active Shooter).
  • Assist in medical emergencies and support police/fire services.
  • Activate fire alarms and aid in fire response, including the use of fire extinguishers.
  • Contact Fire and Police emergency services and relay critical information in a timely manner.
  • Attend to professional responsibilities daily, including actively checking email and using Workday.
