About The Position

The Security Officer is responsible for the general security of students, employees, and Straz Center property. This position patrols grounds and buildings, serves as a deterrent to criminal activity, reports safety hazards and security deficiencies, and makes reports regarding suspicious activity. The Security Officer will also provide customer service to the public by giving directions and information to visitors. Located in downtown Tampa, Straz offers flexible hours, event-based schedules including evenings and weekends, and a team-based work environment.

Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to work a flex schedule of various hours and multiple shifts, to include evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts, as needed.
  • Must be able to pass a level 2 fingerprint screening.
  • Ability to interact in a sensitive, courteous, and understanding way with members of a diverse community, including students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to make sound decisions based on good judgment on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to clearly document activity, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the safe operation of a golf cart.
  • Proficient in the use of hand-held radio and "10 codes".
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office suite and able to retain training on security badging software and access control software.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in a related field.
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver's license.
  • CPR/Basic First Aid Certification
  • State Issued Class "D" Private Security Officer License required and must be maintained/renewed prior to expiration.
  • Ability to move up to 10 pounds, frequently move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally move up to 40 pounds.
  • The employee must be able to remain awake and alert for the duration of the assigned shift.
  • The employee is occasionally required to ascend/descend, reach, and traverse Straz Center during an assigned shift.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The individual must be able exchange information with co-workers, in person, on the phone, and via radio.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior military or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provides all guests with a positive experience by assisting with directions, serving as an information source, and responding to concerns or complaints in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Checks bags prior to entry, verifies credentials, issues badges, monitors video cameras, and uses computer systems to control and document building access.
  • Patrols the interior and exterior of the premises to ensure safety and integrity of building access, responds to issues or emergencies as needed, enforces policies, and reports concerns to the lead security officer.
  • Monitors entrances, posts, and crowds during events; assists with bus arrivals and departures; controls parking and bags meters for production vehicles; and locks/unlocks doors as necessary.
  • Accurately completes incident reports, guard logs, and daily reports while working cooperatively with staff, law enforcement, and fire/rescue personnel.
  • Maintains a clean and neat appearance during working hours.
  • Undertakes any other duties as directed by the applicable supervisor.
