About The Position

Responsible for the protection of the facility and its members against fire, theft, hazardous conditions, and illegal or unauthorized entry. This role involves monitoring radio transmissions, responding to calls and emergencies, completing incident and daily activity reports, and performing vehicle and foot patrols to ensure the safety and security of students, visitors, employees, and campus partners.

Requirements

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • One-year responsible work experience.
  • Current, licensed unarmed security guard (Phase I and II) from the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET).
  • Must maintain required hours of CLEET approved courses per year.
  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license; good driving record.
  • Excellent ability to verbalize instructions, directions, or other types of communication to a diverse population of staff, faculty, students, and visitors to campus.
  • Must be fluent in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong attention to detail to detect irregularities and change of environment.
  • Strong ability to calmly handle and/or diffuse chaotic or hostile situations.
  • Ability to use radio to receive and dispatch emergency information.
  • Must be able to evaluate safety requirements for the health and safety of all faculty, staff, and students on campus.
  • Mature and professional demeanor.
  • Must continuously demonstrate a professional and courteous disposition toward students, visitors, and employees.
  • Patience, tact, and good judgment are mandatory requirements for this position.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions, and respond to inquiries appropriately with all students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and collaborate in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to office computers, fax machines, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • History of ethical and professional behavior.
  • Ability to successfully pass annual Hazardous Communications, Blood-borne, and other departmentally specified safety training is a requirement of this position.
  • Universal precautions are required and followed in departmental work.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required to be used as the situation dictates.
  • Hepatitis B vaccinations and other Hepatitis vaccines are available to protect employees.
  • Physical and mental stamina to perform the essential job functions.
  • May need to lift up to 45 pounds. (If an object weighs more than 45 pounds, OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift.).
  • Extensive standing and/or walking.
  • Occasional bending/stooping, squatting/ crouching and pushing/pulling.
  • Manual dexterity/visual ability to operate a motor vehicle, computer, and radio.
  • Repetitive movement of hand/wrist.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephones, and other office equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Police science, occupational/environmental safety, or a related field.
  • Previous experience as a security guard/officer or related safety field.
  • Experience working in an educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vehicle and foot patrols for the physical safety and security of students, visitors, employees, and campus partners.
  • Provide customer service and assistance as needed.
  • Wear issued uniform, uniform articles, and uniform accessories.
  • Participate with team members to set and attain established goals and objectives.
  • Respond appropriately to new and different situations by using creativity, innovation, and initiative to identify solutions to problems.
  • Conform to all OSU System, city, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Provide clear and concise staff reports for managerial/Administrative action.
  • Keep supervisor informed of concerns.
  • Respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Take appropriate action when needed in the event of an emergency, to handle incidents/situations effectively and professionally and coordinate with Administration in the event of a crisis.
  • Patrol campus buildings and parking lots, by foot and vehicle.
  • Check doors, windows, and other areas to ensure they are accessible or properly secured.
  • Adhere to instructions concerning all opening and closing of classrooms, buildings, events, or other functions that would have an impact on the campus.
  • Act as the liaison between law enforcement agencies and OSU-OKC as necessary.
  • Evaluate the condition of all parking areas, including outdoor lighting, and make recommendations concerning any maintenance and repairs required.
  • Ensure that fleet vehicles are properly secured.
  • Assist in the maintenance, safety, and cleanliness of vehicles.
  • Assist Safety Coordinator with health and safety to eliminate unsafe and unhealthy working conditions.
  • Assist in the safety of the campus, including checking utilities, mechanical, electrical, and storage areas for unusual or unsecure situations.
  • Attend required in-service and other training programs as required regardless of shift hours.
  • Complete all mandatory training and participate in a minimum of two professional development training courses each year.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
