About The Position

The Downtown Committee of Syracuse is seeking a Part-Time Security Officer to patrol downtown Syracuse and ensure its safety. The role involves walking patrols, responding to requests for assistance, and maintaining a professional demeanor. This position is ideal for retired police officers and requires strong public relations skills. Hours are primarily evenings and/or weekends, with potential for daytime shifts. The officer will represent the Downtown Committee of Syracuse professionally at all times.

Requirements

Must be physically, mentally, and emotionally stable and act in a professional manner at all times.
Must be in good physical condition to carry out duties on foot patrol.
Experience in community policing.
A valid NYS Driver’s License is required.
A good driving record is required.
Must conform to a dress code.
Must successfully comply with firearms qualifications.
Must secure a valid pistol permit.
Must understand and comply with the use of deadly physical force regulations as stated in the NYS Penal Law and Criminal Procedures Law.
Must pass a criminal background check.
Must pass drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

Police experience, particularly in community policing.
Retired police officers are encouraged to apply.
Experience with the Syracuse Police Department, Onondaga County Sherriff Department or other municipal Police department preferred.

Responsibilities

Patrol downtown Syracuse to ensure safety.
Conduct walking patrols within the community.
Respond to requests for assistance from businesses and the public.
Assist store owners and Police in restraining individuals when necessary to protect others and themselves.
Act as a first responder to crimes in progress and disputes.
Diffuse conflict and intervene physically when necessary.
Detect suspicious or possible criminal activity and notify police.
Be friendly and courteous to business owners, workers, and visitors.
Comply with firearms qualifications, secure a valid pistol permit, and understand and comply with the use of deadly physical force regulations.
