About The Position

Performs the essential duties and responsibilities and the primary functions of a Security Officer (S/O) in providing safety and security to the staff, patients, visitors and property of Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH). Must use independent judgment in making decisions in a technical or professional field; research and analysis of information that concerns issues of a routine nature, and completion of non-routine procedures in conformance with instructions from supervisor or written guidelines. In addition, S/O’s must maintain the safety, privacy and dignity of all patients, visitors and employees while adhering to the MMH Culture of Ownership.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in security, military, or corrections.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) eligibility criteria.
  • Must obtain Security Level 2 Certification within 6-months of hire.
  • Valid Texas Class C driver’s license required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to use personal computer, two-way radio, and telephone.
  • Must be able to qualify for Texas Motor Vehicle Insurance.
  • Must wear complete Security Officer Uniform.
  • Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak and hear.
  • Lifting is limited to 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. Must use an assisted-lift device or get another individual(s) to assist with the lift that is over this maximum limit.

Responsibilities

  • Answers all calls for security. Calls from dispatch take precedence over patrolling. Once a call is completed the S/O can resume patrol.
  • Takes reports, status checks, valuable/lost and found pick up/return, phone calls, unlocks doors, PML pick-up/release, vehicle assists, escorts, handles suspicious persons/vehicles.
  • Ensures the safety of all patients, physicians, guests, visitors, and employees of the Hospital.
  • Performs routine walking patrol throughout the interior of all Midland Memorial properties.
  • Conducts floor-to-floor security patrol and security clocking rounds.
  • Performs predetermined locking and unlocking of doors.
  • Transports money, medications, and lost and found items according to policy.
  • Investigates criminal and non-criminal incidents reported to the Security Department and prepares detailed, written reports of the incidents.
  • Establishes a high-visibility profile throughout the Hospital and Hospital-owned properties to aid in deterring criminal activity.
  • Reports/Documents any safety or security issues and takes appropriate action to resolve the hazard.
  • Checks for vehicles with doors open or lights left on.
  • Enforces No Smoking policy on campus.
  • Checks for any damage to glass, walls or doors and any improperly functioning equipment.
  • Checks for unsecured doors or open access to restricted areas.
  • Watches for any ‘out of place’ suspicious property or behavior and takes appropriate actions.
  • Is observant/vigilant – notes any unusual sights, sounds, smells or unusual activity.
  • Periodically checks to ensure all interior and exterior doors secure properly and checks all areas (including restrooms and breakrooms) for accidents, running water or leaks.
  • Patrols the exterior of Midland Memorial Hospital properties on foot or by use of Security vehicles (Golf Cart or Police Vehicle).
  • Patrols parking lots, driveways, and emergency traffic areas to detect traffic hazards, parking violations, and deter criminal activity.
  • Assists with patient, visitor, guest, and employee vehicle problems when requested.
  • Checks exterior doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are operational and in good repair.
  • Performs locking and unlocking of parking facility entrances.
  • Provides security presence in parking facilities during shift change to promote an atmosphere of safety.
  • Patrols the exterior of F. Marie Hall Outpatient Center and Legends Park Medical Office.
  • Assists MCHD Police with transportation of patients under Emergency Detention Orders to in-patient psychiatric care facilities.
  • Assists MCHD Police by responding to disturbances, disruptive patients, lost children, intoxicated subjects, etc.
  • Provides routine and special assignments in the Emergency Department.
  • Responds immediately to code situations and emergency calls for assistance.
  • Assists with Medivac operations as needed.
  • Assists with restraints ordered in line with Department and Hospital policy.
  • Issues trespass warnings as directed by law and Hospital policy.
  • Assists in receiving, securing, and transporting law enforcement patients.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relations with patients, physicians, visitors, guests, and co-workers.
  • Displays a positive attitude and promotes team effort.
  • Consistently strives to improve employee and non-employee relations throughout the Hospital.
  • Exhibits a courteous demeanor when answering the telephone, using the two-way radio, or personally helping individuals in day-to-day encounters.
  • Answers all alarms and emergency calls requiring Security assistance.
  • Quickly responds to all fire, pharmacy, and panic alarms.
  • Responds to Hospital-wide emergency calls.
  • Meets responding fire department and life support personnel in accordance with policy.
  • Anticipates Security’s responsibility regarding the call being answered and is prepared to consider the best interests of all parties concerned.
  • Takes control of situations as needed and assists when necessary.
  • Completes all associated paperwork.
  • Secures lost and found articles.
  • Receives, tags, logs, and makes secure all lost and found articles.
  • Attempts to contact owners, if known, and makes arrangements for return of property.
  • Keeps lost and found storage area clean, neat, and secure.
  • Makes proper disposition of articles not claimed within holding period as set out in Departmental Policy and Procedures Manual (Lexipol).
  • Responds appropriately regarding safety and life-threatening situations.
  • Responds appropriately during inclement weather.
  • Responds appropriately to bomb threats.
  • Responds appropriately in a disaster situation.
  • Provides crowd control.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of DNV, General Safety, and Job-Specific requirements.
