Security & IT Engineer

Warp•South San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Warp Sciences brings AI, robotics, and life sciences together in automated laboratories to help accelerate the discovery of new medicines. The Security & IT Engineer owns and continually improves the technology function supporting Warp’s scientists, engineers, and operators. This is a senior, hands-on individual contributor role responsible for keeping systems, technologies, and people safe while ensuring employees have reliable equipment, secure access, and effective tools. The role also builds integrations, automations, and AI workflows that help the organization work more effectively. The engineer manages contractors and specialist partners while remaining accountable for outcomes. The position spans employee technology lifecycle management; onboarding and offboarding; identity, applications, endpoints, networks, and secure remote access; workplace systems; organization-wide AI deployment; integrations and internal applications; and IT for laboratory computers, instruments, and robotics. It also includes implementing security controls, coordinating incident response, leading SOC 1 and SOC 2 work, supporting customer security reviews, and managing vendors and contractors. The role establishes documentation, recovery paths, escalation procedures, and backup coverage. Some incidents and planned maintenance may require after-hours work.

Requirements

  • Broad, hands-on ownership of an internal technology environment spanning employee devices, identity, SaaS applications, networks, workplace systems, and support.
  • Substantive use of AI in personal work, experience building tools or automations with AI, and experience safely and successfully deploying AI technology across an organization.
  • Technical judgment to evaluate, test, debug, and maintain systems, whether purchased, self-written, produced with AI, or delivered by a contractor.
  • Experience owning SOC 1 and SOC 2 processes through completion, including control owners, evidence, assessors, remediation, and sustained operation after examination.
  • Experience responding to real security incidents, including containment, investigation, recovery, communication, and implementing durable improvements based on lessons learned.
  • Working knowledge of APIs, identity, permissions, endpoint management, networking, scripting, and version control sufficient to build integrations and make sound implementation decisions.
  • Strong service mindset, including helping colleagues become more effective, following problems through to resolution, and improving the experience over time.
  • Ability to execute independently in ambiguous environments, set priorities, make recommendations, manage dependencies, keep leaders informed, and drive work through completion with little oversight.
  • Experience selecting and managing contractors while retaining accountability for quality, security, deadlines, documentation, and handoff.
  • Clear, calm communication with scientists, engineers, operators, executives, vendors, auditors, and colleagues needing assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in scientific laboratories, robotics, hardware, sensitive research environments, or environments where physical systems and software are tightly connected.
  • Experience with FedRAMP or other demanding security and assurance programs.
  • Experience with facility moves, rapid company growth, laboratory buildouts, or opening a new office.
  • Experience with physical-access systems, security cameras, meeting-room AV, and building technology.
  • Experience with cloud permissions, engineering access, and secure data movement between laboratory and cloud systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the employee technology lifecycle, including selecting, purchasing, provisioning, inventorying, supporting, maintaining, and retiring computers and peripherals.
  • Deliver onboarding and offboarding, coordinating equipment, accounts, permissions, badges, orientation, access removal, and asset recovery.
  • Build and operate identity, application access, endpoints, wired and wireless networks, switches, firewalls, and secure remote access.
  • Segment employee, guest, robotics, and laboratory systems according to their risk and connectivity needs.
  • Own workplace technology, including meeting-room AV, displays, physical-access systems, badges, and security-camera administration.
  • Deploy AI technology across Warp, including tool evaluation, permissions, data handling, rollout, training, adoption, support, and measurement.
  • Use AI, APIs, automation, and code to build integrations, self-service workflows, and internal applications; test, debug, version, and maintain deployments.
  • Own IT supporting laboratory computers, connected instruments, and robotics systems, partnering with scientific and technical owners on connectivity, procurement, telemetry, software dependencies, vendor access, network boundaries, and changes affecting experiments or data.
  • Implement and operate security controls across identity, endpoints, device configuration, patching, network separation, logging, access, and recovery.
  • Coordinate incident response and engage specialists when deeper expertise is needed.
  • Drive SOC 1 and SOC 2 work from scoping and planning through control implementation, evidence collection, examination, remediation, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Support customer security reviews and integrate assurance work into normal operations.
  • Select and manage vendors and contractors, defining scope, budgets, deliverables, and deadlines; evaluate work, address missed commitments, and secure documentation, administrative access, support arrangements, and handoff.
  • Establish documentation, recovery paths, escalation procedures, and backup coverage.
