About The Position

This role is responsible for monitoring students and visitors in all areas of the building and grounds to help ensure a safe and secure environment. The Security Guard is responsible for helping to deter inappropriate student behavior, refer students with discipline violations to the Deans, help enforce school parking regulations, direct traffic, provide crowd control and provide positive assistance to students and faculty when needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior security experience preferred
  • Prior educational or school environment experience preferred
  • First Aid certification or experience preferred
  • Emergency management or education experience preferred
  • Crisis intervention experience or education preferred
  • Basic math and technology skills, including Microsoft Office suite / Google Workspace, email along with proficiency in the District used security technology and software.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress levels associated with job demands, along with constant contact with students, colleagues and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors all areas of the school building and grounds: hallways, cafeteria, washrooms, locker rooms, parking lot, and grass areas.
  • Deters inappropriate student behavior through high visibility in student areas and the development of positive student interactions.
  • Refers students who violate school rules to the Deans' Office.
  • Assists students with difficulties with lockers, in the cafeteria, in the hallways, etc.
  • Direct visitor, parent, staff, and student traffic.
  • Maintain the assigned continuing education program for security personnel.
  • Provide regular building surveillance; checks exterior of building, grounds and parking areas to prevent vandalism, loitering and illegal activity.
  • Provide supervision and security for and policing of extracurricular or evening functions.
  • Monitor daily bus and vehicle transportation activity.
  • Provide support services for staff-programs and activities.
  • Monitor student activity (i.e. cafeteria, commons, safe haven spaces).
  • Work with school staff and administrators to improve the climate and educational environment of school buildings.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with SRO and the school community.
  • Oversee the security of summer school in the building.
  • Collaborate with the management team to respond to safety incidents.
  • Enforces parking regulations, such as issuing student parking permits and determining which students violate parking regulations.
  • Assists adult staff and visitors by directing them to the appropriate parking areas and determines which adults violate parking regulations.
  • Greet, check, and direct visitors to the building.
  • Attends and participates in staff/security meetings as needed.
  • Performs other duties which may from time to time be assigned.
  • Communicates clearly both in oral and written format with all constituents of the District 113 community.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups.
  • Apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field.
  • Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Must have basic math and technology skills, including Microsoft Office suite / Google Workspace, email along with proficiency in the District used security technology and software.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Interpret an extensive variety of verbal and written instructions and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.
  • Build positive relationships with constituents of the District 113 community that includes visitors, teachers, school staff, administrative team, Board of Education, guardians, students, and private providers.
