About The Position

The University of Washington (UW) is seeking Security Guards for its Campus Facility Security Program. This program aims to enhance the safety of students and personnel by providing security patrols to campus facilities and assigned areas. Security Guards contribute to overall campus security by conducting regular foot patrols throughout assigned buildings and offering general security services at various campus locations. This role is part of the Division of Campus Community Safety (DCCS), which unifies public safety units for a holistic approach to campus safety, preparing for and responding to incidents, and fostering a safe, welcoming environment.

Requirements

  • Physical capacity to perform duties
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license
  • No previous felony convictions
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in all types of weather conditions
  • Driving history for the past three years shall not exhibit a pattern of unsafe driving habits, nor have convictions for Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, or Driving under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs
  • Ability to work at night
  • Successful completion of comprehensive background investigation
  • Disclosure of any substantiated findings or current investigations related to sexual misconduct at current and past employment

  • First Aid and CPR certified (or ability to obtain certifications upon hire) and maintain certifications
  • Flexible and available to work night shifts as assigned to include weekends
  • Flexible and available to work overtime with little/no advance notice
  • Must be comfortable working in and patrolling campus buildings in a solo capacity, including a high-rise building

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties primarily on foot; may operate University vehicle as needed
  • Provide Safety Escort service as part of the Husky NightWalk Program (University faculty, staff, students, guests) to various locations on campus during designated times, as necessary and approved by on-duty supervisor
  • Adhere to Washington State Traffic Laws at all times while on duty and operating a University vehicle
  • Successfully complete the UW Transportation – Safe Driver program to drive a university vehicle
  • Request Seattle Fire Medics to their location if a medical emergency develops during security shift times
  • Administer first-aid to the victim if authorized through department protocols and properly trained to do so
  • Avoid confrontational situations with other persons and request a police officer presence immediately if such a situation starts to develop
  • Advise UWPD dispatch (via radio) whenever suspected criminal activity and/or suspicious circumstances are observed
  • Avoid making contact or engaging in use of force tactics unless an extreme situation (i.e., protect self or others from bodily harm) occurs
  • Perform roving patrols of buildings, parking lots/garages and bike racks for criminal and/or suspicious activity when assigned
  • Perform building admits when assigned
  • Perform building checks and sweeps when assigned
  • Perform battery jumps when assigned
  • Perform special security details as assigned
  • Perform other specified functions determined by the on-duty supervisor
