About The Position

Arlington Public Library is seeking a Security Guard II to provide advanced, safety-focused security services in a dynamic public library environment. This position supports the library’s commitment to maintaining welcoming, inclusive, and safe library spaces through a model that emphasizes professional judgment, de-escalation, coordination, and customer service, while effectively responding to escalated safety and security incidents.

Requirements

  • Completion of requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a G.E.D. certificate, or the equivalent.
  • Considerable experience as a security guard, police aide, or in other physical security work.
  • Skills to de-escalate confrontations or serious situations.
  • Experience in training and supporting staff, coordinating effectively with public safety partners, and supporting welcoming public spaces.
  • A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of basic security concepts and practices.
  • Experience working in a public library, government facility, or other community-focused public setting.
  • Experience serving as an operational point of contact or liaison with law enforcement, emergency services, or other partner organizations.
  • Experience using incident reporting software or case management systems to document, review, track and/or analyze security or safety incidents.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, or informal training to other staff.
  • Demonstrating strong customer service skills in a security or safety role, particularly when balancing enforcement with a welcoming environment.

Responsibilities

  • Enforcing County ordinances, Library Rules of Conduct, administrative directives, and departmental regulations within assigned areas.
  • Performing routine security patrols on foot or by vehicle.
  • Responding to calls to assist in unusual or difficult situations, including serious confrontations with the public, accidents, break-in complaints, and large special events.
  • Investigating incidents and preparing clear, accurate, and timely written incident reports using the library’s incident reporting system.
  • Reviewing incident reports and incident report system data to identify recurring security concerns and sharing information with supervisors to support operational improvements.
  • Serving as an operational liaison with County departments, public safety partners, and other organizations to support incident response, preparedness, and safety coordination.
