About The Position

The Security Coordinator oversees and evaluates security services for the library district, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment that ensures all persons are treated with dignity and respect. The Security Coordinator supervises three library-employed Building Monitors, responds to and documents incidents, and promotes the security of library premises, property, patrons, and staff by maintaining a high level of visibility and vigilance. The right candidate will develop relationships with library users, staff, and partners, collaborating to address problems before they escalate, and play a preventive role as an active and visible security presence in the library.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, mental health or related field
  • Three years of professional security or law enforcement experience
  • Two years of supervisory experience
  • Experience in de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed care, and/or restorative practices
  • CPR and AED certification and NARCAN training
  • Solid computer skills, including knowledge of Google Workspace and incident reporting tools
  • Valid driver’s license and the availability of a properly insured vehicle for use on the job at time of appointment and throughout employment
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes evenings and weekends
  • Positive public service orientation

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with libraries or other non-profit organizations desired
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and the challenges inherent to an urban setting
  • Familiarity with concepts such as motivational interviewing, crisis stabilization, and compassionate limit-setting desired
  • Law enforcement training or certification preferred
  • Passion for public library mission

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and executes strategic goals and initiatives for systemwide security services with the library’s mission, vision, and core values in mind.
  • Provides excellent customer service and ensures security services are rendered in alignment with the library’s values, policies, and procedures.
  • Builds relationships with library leadership and staff to foster a prepared security presence that knows and respects the communities the library serves.
  • Interprets, communicates, and consistently enforces library policies and procedures with library patrons. Advises patrons of inappropriate behaviors that may lead to loss of privileges in a proactive and understanding manner.
  • Schedules adequate Building Monitor coverage at all library locations, taking shifts at each Security Desk when needed.
  • Coordinates with the Library Social Worker to provide trauma-informed responses to crises when appropriate.
  • Directs, plans and assigns the work of Building Monitors; makes recommendations for hiring; develops their potential, and monitors and evaluates their performance.
  • Trains and coaches Building Monitors and other staff on security best practices, including public health approaches to community safety.
  • Helps to foster a culture of preparedness and emergency response.
  • Monitors incident reports and makes policy and procedure recommendations based on patterns observed.
  • Evaluates the security needs of all facilities. Performs periodic risk assessments of potential threats and works to minimize security-related risks.
  • Develops good working relationships with law enforcement agencies and a broad range of community partners.
  • Reviews video surveillance footage to assist library administration, staff, and law enforcement in accordance with the Library Privacy Act.
  • Responds to intrusion alarms/alarm calls and takes appropriate action.
  • Utilizes video surveillance software to monitor, review, and capture images when necessary.
  • Reports and investigates damage to buildings, furnishings, or equipment.
  • Completes detailed incident reports using custom software.
  • Manages crowd control at larger events.
  • Properly handles accidents, injuries, and other emergencies as they arise.
  • Ensures periodic evacuation drills are scheduled and conducted at all locations.
  • Writes and submits a monthly narrative and statistical report.
  • Attends Administrative Team meetings, and board meetings when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
