About The Position

Powerhouse Arts (PHA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Located in a purpose-built facility in Brooklyn, PHA convenes an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they belong. PHA offers fabrication programs in ceramics, print, and public art; alongside membership studios in ceramics and at MGC Community Print Studio, textile workshop, The Alpha Workshops; and spaces for education, events, and public engagement. PHA is seeking a Part-Time Security and Safety Guard to join our growing team. This individual will ensure a safe and welcoming environment within the building and on the Powerhouse Arts property. This role will report to the Safety and Security Administrator. The shift will provide backup coverage as needed. Possible shifts included: 12 am-8 am, 8 am-4 pm, and 4 pm-12 am.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years experience working in a security setting, preference to experience working in a major cultural institution.
  • Experience working large-scale, high profile special events.
  • Prior experience maintaining accurate logs and records of security-related activities, incidents, and observations.
  • Must have and maintain a NYS Security Guard license.
  • Must have valid 8 and 16 Hour NYS Required Training Certificates.
  • Must complete 8 Hour Annual In-Service Course each calendar year.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both orally and written.
  • Physically fit and able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must have flexibility to work extended shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • A confident personality that enjoys interacting with others, particularly high-profile clients in the art industry.
  • Strong observational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid Fireguard Certification of Fitness F01/F02/F03/F60 preferred. If not currently certified, candidates must obtain it within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergencies in a prompt manner and efficient manner.
  • Conduct routine patrols of the premises to ensure security and safety in accordance with building policies.
  • At all times observe and report irregularities such as unusual behavior, property damage, fire hazards, etc. Immediately report any suspicious activities or incidents to the Safety and Security Administrator.
  • Ensure exits and fire extinguishers are free and clear of any obstructions and are accessible.
  • Maintain and hold assigned posts throughout the facility until properly relieved.
  • Stay updated on security protocols, procedures, and relevant regulations to ensure compliance and effectiveness in performing duties.
  • Welcome all staff and guests entering the premises and provide polite and courteous assistance to visitors when requested, while presenting a professional and clean appearance.
  • Utilize verbal de-escalation techniques to handle disruptive behavior or conflict.
  • Enforce access control procedures, including verifying the identity of individuals and restricting access to authorized personnel only.
