About The Position

Nebraska Methodist Health System is seeking a Secretary/Nursing Assistant for the Mother Baby unit at Methodist Women's Hospital. This role supports patient care delivery by providing clerical services and assisting patients with personal hygiene, daily living needs, comfort, transportation, and vital sign monitoring. The position operates on a night schedule, working 2 shifts per week (6:45 pm to 7:15 am), with rotating weekends and holidays. Requirements

  • Completion of the state approved Nurse Assistant course or 6 months previous Nurse Assistant experience required.
  • Requires the ability to understand and carry out instructions, follow schedules, communicate information, read simple and clear instructions, and complete reports.
  • Collects, records, and reports patient needs to the appropriate caregiver.
  • Requires ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills commensurate with job description.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills necessary to communicate with physicians, callers, visitors, patients, family, and team members by verbal and written communication.
  • Skills and knowledge to prepare reports, perform calculations, keep records, and deal effectively with people.
  • Ability to type 30 to 40 wpm with accuracy.
  • Ability to utilize a variety of computer applications, and look at a computer screen 50-80% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) preferred.
  • Student nurse must have completed first clinical rotation - preferred.
  • Previous care giver experience preferred.
  • Previous cleaning, food service and/or patient related experience preferred, but not required.
  • One to three months on the job experience to learn hospital procedures and work routines preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire.
  • Medical terminology preferred.

  • Completes age-specific competency assessments and screens visitors according to protocols.

  • Responds to patient needs promptly and courteously, communicating feedback to appropriate staff.

  • Handles all general communication duties for the unit, including answering telephones promptly and courteously, identifying self and unit.
  • Maintains and operates the call system, faxes information as required, and makes unit announcements professionally.
  • Contacts caregiver promptly when patients have arrived and maintains privacy and confidentiality of patient and staff information.
  • Assists with the maintenance of electronic medical records, scanning documents accurately and notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in maintaining medical records, establishing initial patient charts, processing charts upon dismissal, and preparing records for patient transfers.
  • Performs other unit-specific duties as assigned by RN, Core, or Service Leader.
  • Participates in mandatory inservices and continuing education programs.
  • Assists in keeping the environment clean and tidy, stocking supplies, and organizing office and nutrition center supplies.
  • Completes clinical activities identified in the patient's plan of care to meet patients' comfort, activity, and sleep needs.
  • Reports patient comfort needs to the nurse in a timely manner, assures skin is clean and dry, and reports any noticed skin changes.
  • Provides personal care and assists with ADLs (activities of daily living), repositioning, turning, chair transfers, and ambulation.
  • Completes vital signs and weighs patients per the patient's plan of care.
  • Reinforces patient education and provides transportation assistance.
  • Reports any variation from the patient's plan of care to professional staff.
  • Attends to patient amenities such as newspaper and mail.
  • Maintains patient nutritional status by completing intake/output activities accurately.
  • Assists patients with menu selection, serves meals, and feeds patients as necessary.
  • Records liquid and solid intake and output, monitors Nourishment Center supplies, and maintains a sanitary environment.
  • Documents all data collected in Cerner and/or on worksheets accurately, completely, and in a timely manner.
  • Documentation reflects patient's responses to activities and care delivered.
  • Provides housekeeping activities to contribute to a safe, efficient, effective, and sanitary patient care environment.
  • Completes daily room cleaning according to established procedures.
  • Keeps rooms neat and tidy, free of clutter, and removes trash and soiled linen.
  • Maintains patient environment, such as spills and room temperature, or utilizes Integrated Services team.
  • Distributes linens and straightens/restocks patient care areas per par levels.
  • Attends to patient amenities, such as newspapers, mail, and watering plants.
