About The Position

Horizon Academy is seeking a full-time secondary teacher. Under the direction of the school principal, the teacher will be responsible for educating students placed in the Horizon program through WSD student services. The teacher will provide individualized, flexible instruction and behavioral support to students who have not found success in a traditional school setting. This role requires strong relationship-building skills, expertise in PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), and the ability to support students with academic recovery, behavioral challenges, and successful transition back to a comprehensive high school environment.

Requirements

  • Valid teaching license (secondary level)
  • Strong classroom management and de-escalation skills
  • Deep understanding of PBIS frameworks and restorative practices
  • Experience with credit recovery models and alternative education settings
  • Ability to work effectively with at-risk youth, including those with behavioral challenges or gang affiliations
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with students, families, and community partners
  • Flexibility, resilience, and a solution-oriented mindset
  • Commitment to equity and student-centered practices
  • Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver standards-based instruction across assigned content areas using differentiated and trauma-informed practices
  • Design and implement credit recovery plans tailored to individual student needs
  • Monitor student progress toward graduation and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Utilize blended learning, online platforms, and flexible pacing to support diverse learners
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and academic progress
  • Implement and model PBIS strategies to promote positive student behavior and school culture
  • Serve as a behavior specialist in the classroom by de-escalating conflicts and teaching self-regulation skills
  • Develop and implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) in collaboration with support staff
  • Reinforce expectations consistently while maintaining a structured, predictable environment
  • Collect and analyze behavior data to inform interventions
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students who may have experienced trauma, disengagement, or system involvement
  • Act as a mentor and advocate, supporting students’ social-emotional growth
  • Communicate regularly with families, including those experiencing complex or high-risk situations
  • Demonstrate cultural responsiveness and awareness when working with diverse populations, including students impacted by gang involvement
  • Coordinate with counselors, administrators, probation officers, and community agencies as needed
  • Monitor and support students transitioning back to a traditional high school setting
  • Develop individualized transition plans with clear academic and behavioral goals
  • Maintain communication with receiving schools to ensure continuity of support
  • Track post-transition progress and intervene when necessary to promote sustained success
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including special education, counseling, and administration
  • Participate in IEP, SST, and re-entry meetings as appropriate
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to trauma-informed practices, PBIS, and alternative education
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment aligned with school policies
  • Follow all district and state regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
