Secondary Special Education Behavior Consultative Teacher (11 Month Position)

About The Position

Responsible for providing coaching and support for teachers working with students with disabilities who demonstrate challenging behaviors in the school environment. Support development of FBAs and BIPs and work with school teams to implement positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) in the least restrictive environment.

Requirements

  • Possesses the ability to coach teachers and other school staff through didactic training, modeling, and providing ongoing feedback.
  • Extensive knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis, Functional Behavioral Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans and Positive Behavioral Support approaches.
  • Able to support inclusive practices.
  • Possesses the ability to foster collaboration between all parties.
  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines for special education policy and practice.
  • Have a current (or be eligible for) a Virginia Teaching License, with an endorsement to teach in Special Education.
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Successful experience/background working with students who demonstrate challenging behaviors.
  • Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas.
  • Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other physical activities are required.
  • Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary.
  • Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Occasional attendance to parent conferences, building-level meetings and division wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary.
  • Daily personal close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required.
  • Regular contact with other staff members, parents and medical professional may be required.
  • Contacts with community and division-level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.
  • Interruptions of work are routine.
  • Job responsibilities include both inside and outside duties.
  • Flexibility and patience are required.
  • May be subject to physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such behaviors as hitting, kicking, spitting, scratching and biting.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers assist/restrain students and to operate specialized equipment or office equipment.
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
  • Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Lifting or moving children from wheelchair to tables or desks.
  • Travel to school sites throughout the County is common and periodic state or regional travel, including overnight stays is required.
  • Attendance to meetings outside the normal duty hours is often required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in working within a public school classroom setting.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst Certification with the ability to supervise RBTs and BCBA candidates.
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Works cooperatively with the secondary Lead Teacher Specialist to provide training, support, and resources to staff to pursue/maintain ABA certification and to school staff regarding PBIS for students with disabilities.
  • Provides onsite support/individualized coaching to school staff on best practices for working with students with challenging behaviors.
  • Assists with development of curriculum planning and materials related to successful implementation of IEP.
  • Writes reports related to observation of students with challenging behaviors.
  • Maintains and provides accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Develops and delivers district level professional development.
  • Collaborates with the Region One Autism Education Consortium staff for professional learning and to provide professional development to district staff.
  • Provides training as a trainer in crisis prevention and de-escalation system.
  • Keeps abreast of recent developments in special education and behavioral interventions and shows evidence of continuing professional growth.
  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide appropriate educational programs for students with challenging behaviors.
  • Is an active member of the Hanover County Secondary Special Education Team.
  • Performs related work as required.
