About The Position

The Secondary Science Teacher provides standards-based instruction in science to students in grades 6–12 in alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS). The teacher fosters inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while supporting students’ understanding of scientific concepts and practices necessary for college and career readiness.

  • Proficiency in instructional technology and lab equipment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Science Education, or related field from an accredited institution
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license in Secondary Science (appropriate licensure area)
  • Knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study (Science)
  • Ability to meet all NCDPI and Macon County Schools employment requirements

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (Science)
  • Teach content in assigned areas (e.g., Earth/Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, Physics)
  • Implement inquiry-based and hands-on instructional strategies, including laboratory investigations and experiments
  • Promote scientific thinking, data analysis, and evidence-based reasoning
  • Ensure safe use of laboratory equipment, materials, and chemicals in accordance with state and district safety guidelines
  • Maintain an organized and compliant laboratory/classroom environment
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including Exceptional Children (EC), English learners (EL), and academically gifted students
  • Provide appropriate accommodations and modifications
  • Assess student learning using formative and summative methods and use data to guide instruction
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, grades, and assessments
  • Integrate technology and digital tools to support instruction, simulations, and data analysis
  • Incorporate real-world applications and STEM connections
  • Collaborate with colleagues, instructional staff, and support personnel to improve student outcomes
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and data-driven decision-making
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and performance
  • Participate in conferences, school events, and extracurricular activities as appropriate
  • Support students’ development of scientific literacy, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Follow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
