About The Position

The Secondary English Teacher is responsible for providing standards-based instruction in English Language Arts (ELA) to students in grades 6–12. The teacher develops and delivers engaging lessons aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NC SCOS) to promote literacy, critical thinking, communication, and college and career readiness. The teacher fosters a positive learning environment and supports the academic and social development of all students.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of secondary English Language Arts content and pedagogy
  • Understanding of adolescent literacy development and instructional best practices
  • Ability to analyze and use student data to guide instruction
  • Effective classroom management and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff
  • Proficiency in using instructional technology and digital tools
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or related field from an accredited institution
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license in Secondary English (Grades 6–9, 9–12, or appropriate licensure area)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study (ELA)
  • Ability to meet all NCDPI and Macon County Schools employment requirements

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (ELA)
  • Develop students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to engage learners and promote critical thinking and analysis
  • Design and implement lessons that include literary and informational texts, writing instruction, and language development
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including Exceptional Children (EC), English learners (EL), and academically gifted students
  • Assess student learning using formative and summative methods and use data to inform instruction
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback on student work, including written compositions and projects
  • Create and maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that supports student engagement and positive behavior
  • Establish clear expectations for classroom management and student conduct
  • Integrate instructional technology and digital resources to enhance learning
  • Support students in developing research skills, media literacy, and responsible digital citizenship
  • Collaborate with colleagues, instructional coaches, and support staff to improve student outcomes
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and data-driven instruction processes
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and performance
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and documentation
  • Participate in required professional development, school activities, and meetings
  • Follow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
