About The Position

Assist First Mate and Master of vessel as required in day-to-day operational activities. This role involves standing sea watch, piloting and navigating the vessel, operating and maintaining vessel equipment, and assisting in docking operations. The position requires the ability to pilot/navigate using various equipment, operate hand and power tools, and communicate effectively via VHF radio. The Second Mate must possess strong judgment in operating tugs and handling equipment, with basic computer skills being preferred. Supervisory and leadership skills are also highly desirable.

Requirements

  • Possess a US Coast Guard License, Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels, of at least 200 GRT Near Coastal with a towing endorsement.
  • Current radar observer endorsement.
  • FCC marine radiotelephone operator permit.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Sufficient verbal, reading and writing skills as required by the job.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Total service of 18 months, of which 12 months must be on Towing Vessels.

Nice To Haves

  • Oceans endorsement is preferred.
  • STCW 95 endorsement preferred.
  • Basic computer skills are preferred.
  • Supervisory skills and leadership characteristics are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist First Mate with crew work assignments.
  • Stand sea watch and pilot/navigate vessel in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Operate and maintain vessel equipment in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Assist in docking of barges in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Meets with First Mate and Master of vessel to determine work assignments.
