Seasonal Wildlife Technician
About The Position
This role involves performing all necessary functions to maintain the Wildlife Care Center in a clean and sanitary manner, ensuring that all wildlife in our care receive the best possible care and attention. The position requires humane care for wild animals, cleaning and disinfecting animal areas, preparing diets, feeding, and ensuring water is provided. Responsibilities also include unloading and storing supplies, providing enrichment for patients, performing light maintenance and janitorial duties, assisting in training new staff and volunteers, and supporting other departments to ensure a positive public image and improve animal care quality. The role requires working effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment, disposing of deceased animals, assisting with animal releases, and maintaining department equipment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members of the public, volunteers, and other employees of the organization.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide.
- Ability to perform these operations using units, weight measurement, and volume.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Knowledge of RaptorMed database or ability to become proficient within the probationary period (first six months from hire date).
- Basic knowledge, or ability to become proficient, with Microsoft Office and computer keyboarding skills, and data entry.
- Valid California Driver’s License with clean driving record to be insured with PHS insurance.
- Ability to manage the emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances.
- Must pass a background check upon hire.
Responsibilities
- Provides humane care for all wild animals in care.
- Cleans and disinfects all animal areas as necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
- Prepares diets, feeds, and ensures water is provided as directed for all wildlife.
- Unloads, stores, and restocks Wildlife Care Center supplies.
- Helps provide enrichment for wildlife patients.
- Performs light maintenance and other janitorial duties.
- Assists in the training of new staff and volunteers.
- Provides assistance to other departments as assigned to ensure a positive public image, enhance the operation of the organization, and improve quality of care for animals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Works effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Disposes of deceased animals.
- Assists with animal releases as necessary.
- Maintains department equipment in good working order.
- Reports items for repair/replacement as needed to appropriate supervisory staff.
- Assists in training and supervising department volunteers.
- Brings any performance issue to managers.
